    That's going to be difficult

    to answer BigAndy.

Question is, do you have money? meaning, about $3-$5k to use? if so, then you can live in the Bronx (i loved it there), Queens or Brooklyn by yourself. It's going to take some "BUDGET DISCIPLINE" but it can be done. Manhattan is out of the question on the salary of a beginning officer, which is only $25k the 6 months and then $31k the last 6months of that year. If you know someone your extremely cool with, you can ask them if you can live with them for no less then 2yrs, which is about as much time your going to need to save up enough to get your own place in the 3 bouroughs i mentioned above. For those who have told you to move to NJ, the last time i checked, an NYPD officer couldn't live outside the 5 bouroughs at all....illegal and whatnot; although i know of a few that do....they just haven't been caught yet....why risk it????? the next best thing to having your own money/place or living with family is to pick up the Village Voice (newspaper) and look for apartment shares. that can be just as good and can (CAN...you still have to look within your own budget of course) save you some cash. Just make sure you have your own key and possibly a padlock to your room.....that's up to you when you interview for the apartment.

Hope this helps you....it helped me when i 1st moved to NYC.

From some of the other posts, there still seems to be some confusion. Vengeance is absolutely correct:

You don't have to live in the 5 boroughs, but you have to live in NY State within one of those counties.

If you dont' have any $ saved up, the hudson valley, and LI are not really options, as you'd have to add in the expense of a car, and/or trains to get to/from work.

Yes, you have to be able to cover those expenses as you can't count on other options. However, after the first couple weeks most of the people who live farther out find groups of other recruits with whom to carpool.

Cost of living outside of the five boroughs is generally cheaper. The cost of rent itself would be lower. Trains into NYC are the same price as the subways if you lived inside NYC - free.

There is really no "right" answer to this question. I could say that you "need money saved up" to get a nice place in NYC - because it's more expensive. It really comes down to where you're willing to live, how much you're willing to pay, how well you balance your budget AND where you work.

If you get an apartment in one borough and get assigned to a precinct in another - who's to say that you would have a nice easy commute? Unless you want to ride from your borough, through Manhattan, to where you work you'll probably need a car. Cost of gas, rush hour traffic, trying to find parking... it adds up.

A recruits best bet is simply to take the subway or train for free and spend his time instead of the little money the city is paying.

For the academy it makes sense to use public transportation, as it is convenient and cheap, or to carpool, as your hours are predictable.

Unfortunately, neither of these are guaranteed after graduation. Some precincts are not easily accessible by public transportation and many people do not recommend taking the subway home from an area occupied by people you may have locked up. Carpooling can be difficult if someone in the carpool makes an arrest and has overtime while the others in the carpool did not.

Bottom line: public transportation or carpool is great for the academy, but budget for your own car after graduation; you may need it.
