My journey to becoming a Detention Officer for the LAPD

I know it's not for police officer, but I figured I'd post it here anyway since you guys are more familiar with the hiring process.

I applied for Detention Officer for the LAPD back in April of this year.

I passed the written test, physical abilities test (PAT), and did really well on the interview.

I received a 90% final score and was ranked #1 in the hiring list :D

Today I received a packet from the LAPD which contained a Civilian Application form. It somewhat resembles a background investigation packet, since it practically asks you about everything in your life.

I have a pretty clean record. No convictions. Clean driving record. Good credit (no delinquent accounts). The only thing that concerns me is the section about drug use.

I've tried/used marijuana before. A couple times in high school and college, but I was not a regular smoker. From the best of my recollection, the last time I used marijuana was early 2001. Other than that, I've not done/tried any other narcotics/drugs.

Do you guys think that think that this will harm my chances of becoming a Detention Officer? Or am I worrying too much? :(

By the way, there is no polygraph test required for Detention Officer. It is a civilian position only, not sworn in like police officers. Do you think they'd be as strict on the marijuana use?

    Michael

It seems to me your biggest concern is the amount of time that has passed, or lack thereof. 2001 was not that long ago and it does not reflect well that you used MJ so recently. It may not be a big deal, but it raises a red flag to me.

Your drug use isn't a mjor issue except for the time. It is quite recent.

Did you check their web site to see what the requirements are for drug use??

We had ours posted for awhile......When MJ was a felony, it was 3 yrs.......not sure if it has changed now.

Try lying about it and you will be done........You are in a good spot, just be honest and hope for the best. Dwell on the issue and it will bring you down.

well, when i said early 2001, it was probably around February 2001 that i last had marijuana

so it's going to be 3 yrs. in a couple months. I also asked some people and they said that the minimum is 3 yrs for the LAPD police officers (sworn position). i wonder if they're a little more lenient since it's a civilian position?

the class for Detention Officer does not start until May 2004, so that means it's going to be more than 3 years by the time i actually get hired
