He was told only that he "Didn't meet the minimum standards." It wasn't the competition either, he was literally told the job was his. The person he was to work for son is on my travelball team. My gut feeling was it was stealing. He did that just over a year ago. Another thought was him bumping the car. Does that constitute hit and run? That is what he put. Thanks for the input it was really appreciated. I think he is going to apply elsewhere and see how it goes.
You're welcome, although I would say others answered you as well, just in a different manner, and you'll notice they have the Verified LEO tag, which means that they've been through this and know what they're talking about. Not to say that I don't have some intelligent input as well, but I'm not a LEO yet, so I'd listen to them before me
That said, it makes a difference what those "some" offenses were. Since the stealing was just over a year ago, I'd say that's probably it, although if he bumped the car recently that would be a problem as well. Both actions show a lack of maturity on your son's part and willful transgression against the law he's applying to uphold. No offense, but, if I were the hiring department I wouldn't hire someone who, little more than a year ago, even knowing he wanted to be a police officer, committed theft and hit someone's car without owning up to it.
Most people don't have a squeaky clean past, and I know people who've admitted to stealing when younger and not been DQ'd for it. However, your son would need to put some time between his transgressions and his applications. Most departments won't hire someone who's smoked marijuana within the last one to three years....I'm betting being nearly an adult and stealing and hitting a car w/out leaving insurance info would merit as much if not more time between. And, as said before, when he applies somewhere else they'll ask about his previous apps and whatever he was DQ'd for will come up.
We must all fear evil men. But there is another kind of evil which we must fear most, and that is the indifference of good men.
