    Question Dui???

In 2005 when I was 20 I was convicted of a DUI....i have completely taken care of all fines and classes etc.... the thing is that i also had a small piece of Marijuana and resisting arrest was also put in my paperwork eventhough I never actually physically resisted the Officer. I was only charged with the DUI and the other two offenses were dropped. Will this keep me from being hired by law enforcement agencies or will I still be eligible?

You will typically need a minimum of 5 years between the date of offense for the DUI and your application, per some of the applications I have seen in AZ. You were arrested for possession and resisting which will hurt quite a bit in the process. You stated that you did not actually resist, but actions such as taking your hands off the wall/car can be construed as resisting, as well. Departments ask what you were arrested for in addition to what you were convicted of.

You are still eligible, but not a good candidate vs others in my opinion.

You may meet the minimum qualifications for some departments now. You will meet the minimums for more after a few years.

Despite this fact, you face a large uphill battle. Most of your competition will not have been arrested at all, let alone for DUI, Possession, and resisting. Even if the charges got dropped, you can count on the agency you applied to getting a copy of the arrest report and finding out exactly what you did that night.

You will have a very difficult time getting hired.

DUI is a terrible offense to have to overcome to get hired and here is why, its a major traffic offense and most officers spend the majoriity of there time operating a patrol vecicle on the road.

Also in addition many departments when talking to you view alchol as a serious problem. Would you ever come to work hungover or still a little buzzed. If you had a really bad day at work would you go home and self medicate? I'm sure you get the point by now.

I think that if you take that tact in an interview you will not be hired by any agency, ever.

You imply that the officer who wrote the report included events that did not occur. If you tell that to an interview board you will probably be able to watch their eyes glaze over as they dismiss you from consideration (while you are still talking) and start wondering where they are going to eat lunch that day.

If you want any realistic chance you have to accept responsibility for your past behavior.
