Who does the Background Check?

Just out of curiosity, who actually does the background check? Do they use someone from their own department of do they contract the work out to a seperate agency?

So far I know that a local sheriff's department in my area uses their own detectives to conduct the background check. Also, I know that a small town in my area uses an indepdent personal-iinvestigator for theirs. I'm just wondering if there's a "standard" of if each dept. just decide on who to use based on what's available resource and personnel wise.

at the department I am getting hired by,they have their own background inverstigators....the only time they go outside the department is for the psych testing and the medical...

it's usually a an officer in the department. Some federal agencies use outside contractors.

Our detectives do them , plus they use a twenty page questionnaire in addition to the already completed app. to do the polygraph from.

I would be surprised they go outside for some of the records searches since it involves criminal history and off-line searches which are only available to LE.
