They look at your answers from the written exam and hone in on anything they might consider a cause for concern.
Consistency with your previous answers is a big part of it.
The major thing these days is keeping ex-military with time in Iraq screened for PTSD.
No joke, some questions will have you thinking "Wow, who would answer 'YES' to that question?" Answer: No one in their right mind.:p

Honestly its not really that special. The written portion is very annoying due to the fact that its very long and it is hot in that room and you have to wear a suit. Most questions are just silly really aka: Do you hear voices? lol. Oral psych is a hit or miss. I was just asked about my life in general. They focus a lot on alcohol, so I was asked about my college years in detail ;). Other than that it feels like a regualr job interview not like a psychological evaluation. As a side note I found out a lot of people got held back with psych from my group, so makes me thing something happened there internally. If you have any more questions feel free to ask.Good luck.

I got a Psych Interview today, my previous assigned psychologist quit, so this is gonna be fun.
Guys I have a question, because I've been wondering what to do.
Ok here it goes: I have already my credits to join the NYPD, I'm not a U.S. Citizen yet, but hopefully I'll be good for the January class. On the other hand, I just need 8 credits to finish my college degree, but if I enroll in school for Spring Semester 2008 I'll be missing January's class and will have to wait until July 2008. I'm just little undecided, so what's your advice in my situation?
Thanks in advance for your help.
Kidnxtdoor, or anyone else that could give me the right answer. I ve seen on other forums that during the psych they will ask you " are you afraid of death? " or are you afraid of dieing ? I would like to know is it a yes that they are looking for? I just find that question kinda wierd when you think about it . you want to be a cop in a city where lately perps think its open season on cops and your afraid of death. I was in the service for three years ( no I do not suffer from PTSD) however I faced death multiple times , if I didnt my actions might have resulted in multiple deaths including my own. I Just want to know what is it that they are looking for?
If you are truely afraid of death would you be able to function when the sh*t hits the fan out on the street. Y
10-5?
No matter what people will say, everyone is a fraid of death as the instinct to preserve ones life is a very strong one. Its not about being afraid, but about being able to face that fear in a life and death situation in order to save someone and do your job.

a question liek this should not be posed on the forum. These questions are based on YOUR feelings and actions. It is how you articulate you answers that will determine whether you are fit for the job. Dont ask anyone for the right answer, you need to give the answer that best fits your life. If you are truely scared of dying, then state that. There is no right or wrong answer, every answer can be articulated.
