For me it wasn't a calling either. I was working in the oil industry and was laid off when it went bust in the early 80's. The "Job" was embedded in my family both here and in Kentucky. I had a few friends who had already gone to work for the Department that I am with and they suggested that I apply for one of the open positions, at least til I got called back to work at my previous job. I had been a DPS explorer and I figured, hey, what the heck. Applied, was hired, went through the academy and became a Certified Texas Peace Officer. Was called by my former employer later about my former job, but told them thanks, but no thanks, I was very happy doing what I should have been doing all along.
So, I guess what I am trying to say is that I really didn't want to become a Police Officer right off the bat, but now I couldn't imagine ever doing anything else. I might do a little bitching now and then about the job, but my department has been very good to my family and myself over the past 24+ years.
Really though, I just like to drive fast and carry a taser.:D
Salus populi suprema lex esto.
For me its with my uncles that gave me the impression of me wanting to be a police officer. And since I was little to now I have not changed my mind. I honestly can't see myself behind a desk, I rather behind the wheel...
Dont worry Lawson. I currently hold the clerk position at my department. I probably average two 12 hour patrol shifts a week along with five 5 hour clerk/desk duty shifts.
I just have to make my patrol shifts count!
haha.

Rest in peace.
I became a cop because somebody has to stand up to the punks that knock a 80 year old lady down and steal her purse.
Somebody has to march out of the gates of Troy into the Face of Chaos.
Somebody has to put fear into the scourge of society and present them for consequence for their actions.
Somebody has to be the sheepdog and protect the herd from the wolf.
Somebody has to risk it all to make a difference.
Since I am not a sheep, nor am I a wolf...I was compelled to join that elite group of Somebody Making a Difference.
This career is not a sprint, it is a marathon.
So, did you get enough information for your school paper?
On a clear night, I can see the other deputies emergency lights at least 10 miles away.
