applying NYPD from out of state -- what can I do about the residency requirement ?

I am applying to the NYPD from out of state (CT) and this has become a problem for me. The NYPD requires that I live in NYC before I can be appointed but to do so I would have to quit my job and sign a lease in NYC, and I would have to do both BEFORE I could even be assured that I would have a new job and $ to pay the rent in NYC. So, I can't move without quitting my job and I can't be assured of having a new job once I move. Any ideas ? I know some people who live in NYC and I could say that I am staying with them, but I doubt that I could do anything more than say this (that is, I don't think I could actually live with them; they'd just let me say that I was). I've seen a few other posts on the net claiming that this (saying I'm staying with a friend without actually doing it) isn't a problem as long as I actually get an apartment quickly after I'm appointed, but I find this hard to believe. Anyone got any tips (especially if you've had this problem too) ?
    thanks,
    -->GJ

During BI you will need to prove/show:
    1) Proof of residency such as utility bill with that address and your name, cancelled rent checks, etc...
    AND
    2) Your neighbors will be visited and asked about you. If they don't know you...red flags!
    AND
    3) They will verify that you do in fact live there by visiting. If your not around, after a few attempts, detective from the local precinct has to find you. If your not around, expect more red flags.
    AND
    4) Need to have a NY license prior to getting hired. To get that, you need to prove NY state residency.

I sympathize but you have three choices:
    1) Play the game and say you live with friends, get caught in a lie, and be forever DQ'd from any police department for falsifying paperwork.
    or
    2) Forget about your dream job and do something else.
    or
    3) SUCK IT UP AND MAKE THE SACRAFICE ALL OF US DID! I moved from NJ, left a decent job and the such to pursue my dream. I took a crap job, lived on hotdogs and PBJ and lived in a dump for almots a year while I processed for hiring. I and many others made the sacrafice. If you want the job bad enough, you will do what is necessary. Otherwise, don't complain.
-In God we trust. All others, put your hands on the car and don't move.

Joey hit it on the head,

Most of us are broke as hell and behind on our bills. You can do it as long as you don't have kids...
    Got my call!

Once again Joey hit it on the head. You can do the QUEST program and go through the whole interview process. My investigator told me I'm good to go and expect the phone call for this July class. I am sure if you make it through the whole process you will be hired however, prior to being hired you have to move. So my suggestion is to take the test, go through the quest program, and see how you do. If you make it all the way through then consider your residency situation

I lived in Jersey all my life, saved up enough money, and now I have a place in SI. Don't move until you have finished almost all the steps, and your BI tells you to. I did not move until my BI said everything is okay.
