    Question Asthma

I was diagnosed with asthma when I was little and I was wondering if departments would not hire me because of it. I was about to join the Navy a year ago but did not feel good about hiding the fact that I had asthma. I have not had any problems in about 5 years. I played football for 4 years in High school starting and played one year in junior college and never had a problem with it. But according to U.S. military rules you are not allowed in with asthma. In short will this affect my chances of getting in the academy?

    Thank you,

    Daniel M

I live in the Central Valley in California, I think my problem was with crappy air.

Long as it doesn't affect your everyday work and physical abilities then I don't see a problem. But it depends on the department.

In my area just about everyone born here that I know was diagnosed with some type of respiratory problem. I don't think it will be an issue around here, but you never know. I have friends go a live in other parts of the country for college and they say they feel way better there.

Here is my thread from awhile back of mine about asthma. Interesting stuff. I have asthma as well, and was also worried about it affecting my application. I am currently on a steroid drug that I take every day that is preventing asthma attacks. Good luck with your career.

    Daniel,

You might be able to get the military to waive your asthma problem. If you just had it as a kid, they'll likely do this for you.

I was never diagnosed w/ asthma, but I did have some wheezing during swim practice (due to smog in So Cal), I went ot see my Dr about it and he gave me an inhaler to see if it would help. When I enlisted I told them I didn't know if I had been diagnosed with asthma or not.. The waiver took a long time to process, but they finally set me to a Dr to get tested and put the waiver through. Part of the reason they might have done it thoguh was I had a really high GT/QT score and they didn't want to lose me. Had the recruiter not pushed for it, things might not have worked out.

In the end, it turned out I had never been diagnosed with asthma, but hey made me do all the tests and waiver anyway. Having never been diagnosed with it, it turned out to be a non-issue with my PD medical exam.

Well they wanted me to over look it saying that the military can not look at my doctor records, but please if the Gov. wanted to know how many times a day a take a piss they could find out. It did not sit right with me. They were saying that a lot of people my age 20 have been diagnosed with it around here and the only other way to go was if my family and I paid for the doctor to clear me. I figured it was too much hassle to go through for something I was not sure about. The only reason I was going to do it was going to join the military was to help me in the police academy.

No problem I get up at 5:30 every morning to run trying to get in better shape for the academy.
