    Gotta start somwhere

I am in the LAPD hiring process right now. I gotta get my butt in shape. I was in the Army in the late 80s. However, I have not maintained a very good regimen at all after that. OK, no regimen. I need to start running, but I am unsure how. I also need to start a weight training program.

I was wondering if anyone had any good advice on the subject. With the running, I take it I would start walking and work my way up. What about the strength training? I have read you should work out 1 part of your body once a week. Like arms one day, legs the next, etc.

Any help would be great on this.

I can picture in my mind a world without war, a world without hate. And I can picture us attacking that world, because they'd never expect it.

Dzeltman it's all about how bad you want it. There is a lot of good info out there and you should start slow so you don't injure yourself.

I would start walking about fore times a week. Chances are good your not going to get any injures doing that.

Have a realistic time frame in mind to start running. You will know when the time is right. Don't worry about the distance 5 minutes out and 5 minutes back.

Then you slowly build on that. Good nutrition is also very important.

Have a positive mind set and be realistic. There is nothing more important than your health. It should be a lifestyle not a season.

Best of luck. You can do this.

Get with a personal trainer at a gym. He can put you on the right track with a workout program.

    This is my workout:
    Mon. - Chest, cardio
    Tue - Back, abs
    Wed - Bi's,Tri's, cardio
    Thurs - Legs, abs
    Fri - rest or cardio
    Sat - shoulders,abs
    Sun - rest

I typically do 4 sets per exercise and 6-10 reps
And for cardio I do running around my neighborhood for at least 20 minutes or run on the treadmill for 20 minutes.

I was worried about the 1.5 mile running part of the physical agility test for the department I am testing for. I used to be 290lbs 2 years ago but have since lost the weight but I am still in no way a runner. So I just ran on the track every morning, I started out with 1 mile and was running 3 miles a day by the end of the two months. I just took the physical agility test this weekend and on the 1.5 mile run, I finished first with a time of 9:50. The time surprised the hell out of me because I never timed myself before. I couldn’t believe I left all the Marines and everyone in the dust. I seriously think I was the only person that actually prepared for it. So if you just run a little every day you’ll be fine, just work your way up.
