There are two general ways to become a Police Officer in this great state.

    1. Sponsor yourself through the academy, take the TCLEOSE test, then apply at an agency, or

    2. Apply at an agency, and then have them sponsor you through the academy. If you are curious as to the application process...that differs with each department. Generally, you can expect

    A thorough background investigation
    Maybe a polygraph exam
    A written test
    A physical ability test
    A physical exam
    A psychological exam
    An initial interview
    An oral board interview
    Maybe a BPAD test

    (not in order)

Each department in Texas has its own standards.

Many departments have their own academy, some departments get together and 3 or 4 will have an academy together to keep costs down, and of course you can always go to an academy you pay for in your own and hope you can get a job afterwards.

The Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Officer Standards and Education sets the minimum requirements for LEO's.

You can also find info in the Texas Occupations Code chapter 1701. Just run a google search on Texas Legislature or Texas Occupations Code

As far as what each deprtment wants, call or visit the website.

I am going to see the chief today for Stafford Police Department here in Houston. They might sponsor me but the chief wanted to talk to me first, I guess I'm just nervous...
Is there a minimum amount of time you have to put in to a PD before you can apply to other places? I have had guys from Sugar Land PD telling me to transfer as soon as I get out of the academy and I have taken my test...more money, a lot more money actually!
Well, this is it for now - wish me luck at the chiefs office LOL!

    Have a good one!
