What do employers think about Military Guard/Reserve?

    Hi,

I'm currently serving in the Air Force, and I am considering going ANG after my enlistment is up. My question is if I try to get hired onto a city Police department (California), will being in the Guard or Reserve hurt me? The reason I ask is because in the ANG or Reserves, I may be called up to deploy, and if a Department knows I may be deployed for a few months, that may be looked on as unfavorable. I'm not sure if they consider it to be a PITA to hire Military reservist and have to deal with them leaving whenever they are deployed. So my question is will being in the Guard or Reserve make a department less willing to hire me?

    Thanks

Being reserve has never hurt anyone in my department and we have several who were and some who still are. Military is hardly ever looked at as bad. I can see where it can be a problem in small places where manpower is tight but I dont see an issue with it.

Different departments have different policies. Say you get recalled to active duty from the reserves... Speak to the departments you're interested in to find out. Also under the GI Bill you should receive money for both the academy and field training.

I mean, we're getting killed for these people and they don't even appreciate it. They think it's a big joke.

I would think though that ANY Police Department in America would love to hire a person with military experiance.

One of my best buddies is in NYPD and drills twice a year with the USMCR for thirty days. In a few short years his 20 years will be up for reserve duty and he will be able to collect retirement at the appropriate age. Not a bad deal. But he still has another 13 years to go for this 20 in the NYPD.

I've only worked in ine agency that was not very suportavie of the Reserves, the jail adiminstrator was a retired Air Force guy, too. If you have concerns see if you can get an IMA slot rather than being a unit reservist.
But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same object, evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new guards for their future security.

Translation for the intellectually challenged: If the government screws the people too much, it is the right and duty of the people to revolt and form a new government.
