    Various departments hiring process

Just curious as to why some departments vary so much in their hiring process? Why do some give you the poly at the first and others choose to wait 'til the very end? Does it have anything to do with how much they rely on it or is all related to $$$? The same goes for things like the physical testing and oral board. I'm guessing the psych and medical are usually last because it cost the department money to have these done and they want to be fairly sure that they are going to hire you. The same may apply to the poly too if its being done by an outside agency. Just trying to spark up some conversation! :D

Be honest here... do you hold the same opinions as everyone else you know? Do you always see "the right way" of doing things as everyone else you know?

Of course you don't. LE agencies, just like any other organization composed of people, are run by individuals who think they have the best means to run the organization (some accomplish this better than others), and as such, some will have very different requirements and expectations in their hiring process due to the policies created by those in charge.

This is a bit off topic, but in a sense, explains the different systems used.

The United States prides itself on State's Rights, in other words, being individualized from the Federal Government.

I doubt you would ever see a Federal Police Force in which all uniforms, vehicles, equipment and standard operating procedures are the same throughout the U.S.

Police and Sheriff Departments enjoy custom tailored agencies to the population they serve. They do not want someone from D.C. telling them how to do their job. (This also makes it much harder to conduct a coup.) This is why they have different and distinct uniforms, patches, badges and vehicle markings.

Along these same lines, the executive staff of an agency is going to tailor the hiring format they way they want it, not the way everyone else does it.

It boils down to good old fashioned American Individualism.
This career is not a sprint, it is a marathon.
