Things to do to improve chances of getting hired?

I am wondering what specific things a person can do in order to maximize their chances of getting hired in law enforcement.

I understand the obvious, such as physical strength, endurance, and flexibility; being intelligent, calm/confidant personality, excellent social/people skills, strong desire for self-improvement and desire to serve.
But I am very curious when it comes to education and experience.

    1) as far as education, would it be more beneficial to get a B.A. in Criminal Justice, or maybe an A.A.S. in Criminal Justice, and a second A.A.S. in Business Administration, perhaps? any thoughts on education are very valuable to me.

    2) as far as experience goes, I have no military experience, and am wondering what sort of experience are valued to most agencies. Is it important to get private security experience? does learning Spanish help? how about CPR or basic EMT training? volunteering? other?

I am a 28 year old with a high school diploma, and no college education. my background is spotless, and I am serious about a career in law enforcement. I know competition can be very high and really want to know what I can do to stand out from many other well qualified candidates. I want to assemble a plan that will maximize my chances for success from the beginning and go after it. So any advice on my previous questions and even things some of you law enforcement professionals would have done different would be helpful.

    thanks to all.

As far as question #1 goes:

I know plenty of guys who have been hired with no experience and squeaky-clean records. Anything postive in your background will obviously help- volunteer work, college degrees and solid employment history to name a few.

    Marry the chief's daughter...or son, whichever applies.

Graduate from a four year university, serve four years or more in the military, and yes, learn Spanish if you can.

I'm still in the process of getting hired, but this is what I've done currently and in my past to better my chances of becoming a police officer:

    1. I have a bachelors degree
    2. I volunteer my time in the community
    3. I have had lasek surgery
    4. Got CPR certified
    5. Took a small arms training class to become more proficient with various hand guns
    6. Go to the shooting range.
    7. I have a credit score close to 800.
    8. I have worked as a supervisor in my current profession for 8 yrs.

Hopefully, this is enough to get me hired. I want this more than anything.

You have to know that you are up against all those other people with spotless records who have college degrees and military experience. Most agencies require at least 60 college credits. I have mentioned before that at least half my class were prior military and had at least a BA/BS...
