Suffolk County PD test prep advice

Just a quick question to any Suffolk County Police Officers: the test is coming up in June and I know how competitive it is, so how can I get a competitive edge? Has anyone taken any prep courses and what were the results? I just want to give myself the best opportunity in preparing for this exam to score as high as possible to be considered for the job.I appreciate your feedback and dont need any wise guy comments, so if you were planning on answering this question please keep this under consideration

    Good luck!

Hey i don't blame you for wanting to take a prep course. I know SCPD will be mailing out an official study guide 1 month before the exam. Expect to have it on your doorstep by May. Did anyone else get any paperwork since signing up for the exam?

I know for the NJ civil service test there are companies that provide test prep services. I don't know if this is the case for Suffolk but try to search online if there are any courses. I know in Jersey they run around a few hundred dollars. Good luck. It's a great job if you can get it.

haha not to get your hopes down. Coming straight from a nassau cop with 22 years on the job. We were chatting it up in the deli. 20,000 candidates take the test, maybe a 100-200 get hired. Come on, it dont a mathematian to figure out your odds. But like hte lottery, someone has to get the job so why not you?

If i were you i would study the NYPD test online because it is free and it is basically what you can expect from suffolk county. There will also be a bunch of questions such as "what would you do in this situation?" Think about common sense stuff and you should be alright.

    Not this year!

Do your homework! Suffolk went with a new company for the test this year! Expect nothing like any other year! It will not resemble the NYPD test! I, like many others signed-up for a course from a place in New Jersey. Pretty decent place with a history of police only prep. If you pay a few hundred for a class, and pass, and get into the pool and selected, it is money well spent!

I took the test back in 03 and it wasnt like the nypd test then...It hasnt been since the mid 90s...they have 3 sections to it. One is like the normal civil service test, then they have a built in psych test, and then the third part I forget.

Step 2- this one is alittle bit harder now, get a CRANE within the suffolk county PD. No sgt or lt, im talking captain baby!
And lax i dont know how well those cranes work in suffolk to get hired, maybe after your in. A guy in my volly FD is a capt of a pct, but its not like it use to be in the 80s and 90s...since they started the lotto, at least that is what ive heard from the scpd cops i know

As for what kind of score you need, the people they are processing right now got 92s on the 2003 exam. One guy I know said they sent letters to 400 people or so with that score to start the process, only 200 showed up, and not even 1/2 passed the physical test they give. This is prob going to be the last or 2nd to last class of this list. I got an 87.5 in 2003 and shared a list # with at least 5K people, it was in the mid 2XXX

I agree with you that the money spent on SCPD prep is well worth it because a shot at one of the highest paid PD's in the US is money well spent. Thanks for steering me in the right direction guys!

    Any tips for me?

Hey has anyone ever used policequiz.com to study for a police exam? I don't want to buy it if its a bunch of crap. I don't live in ny yet so i won't be able to take a class there. If i do buy it i'll let you guys know if its worth it. I think it is $24.00 for a bunch of online quizes and study guides.

    Do yourself a favor!

Don't buy the Policequiz.com test for SCPD, It is a waste of money and has nothing but common sense questions! It says it has judgement questions and all this stuff but trust me, go to a class or look elsewhere! Hope this helps!
