Question I'm a little concerned about my back ground...

I am really excited about joining our city’s PD. I want to serve the community and make a real difference in the lives of the resident’s here. I do have a question about my back ground and my past jobs. I do have a spotless 4 year military career, with an honorable discharge. I do not have any major smudges and no drugs, but I have made some bad decisions with theft/shoplifting (no arrests)that I really regret. I also have one arrest for trespassing 10 years ago, and some things that I did as a teen. I have had quite a few jobs, probably 12 or so in the past 17 years. Most of the job changes I have had are from relocating to new cities and I have a couple of gaps in employment due to relocating or being laid off. How is this looked at on my application, and how can I feel more confident today about continuing the hiring process? Please Help!

Well everything seems ok to me except the shoplifting part. Explain this more in detail. What did you take and how long ago did this occur?

I took things like a tool here and there, and clothes (shirts I couldn't afford), and little things like pens and candy. The last time I shoplifted was about 7 years ago. Nothing I am proud of. I can't even believe I even did it. If I make restitution to the stores does that make a difference? (write them a check?) Thanks for your time, I really appreciate this! Ed

Making restitution will help, as it shows you are taking responsibility for your actions.

How much it will help, seeing that you waited until you were in process, is debatable.

The important thing is that you discuss everything with your background investigator. Lay everything out on the table and be truthful, because once you're in this profession your integrity is all you will have.
