    Discrimination or not?

    After reading through the requirements for many police departments in both Canada and the USA, I've noticed that there seems to be a bit of discrimination towards white males in the recruitment process. After some research, I've managed to find multiple stories of white males, who were very good candidates, getting removed from the process with no explanation. There's even been a case where 108 white males were "randomly de-selected" from the hiring process, while the remaining minorities remained. The case was won by one of the removed applicants.

    Anyway, my question is: How long will this go on? Is it even a problem at all, or are people just getting all up in arms over nothing?

    Discuss.

    That's pretty messed up. I've not heard of it around here in the U.S though. Anywhom, still messed up.

    Yeah I don't think it's happening as much down in the states as it is up here in Canada and over in Europe.

    thats messed up if its true... :mad:

    speaking of discrimination, here is an opposite story in the San francisco Bay Area just north 40 miles,

    I was doing research for a project in 2004-2005 and the city of santa rosa (population of 147,595) has 1 african american in their police department...

    and they milk the hell out of him as people say he is often in department training and promotional videos. (dont know if this statement is true or not, its only rumors)

    i wouldn't worry about discrimination of white males. White males are and will always be the most privileged class in the US. If you look at most law enforcement agencies, white males account for the majority of officers, usually mirroring the the national ratio if not more. If, for example, white males constitute 40% of the US, you would expect most police departments to have 40% of their officers be white males (of course, special locals like CA that have higher percentages of minorities will be different). If you look at the numbers though, a large number of departments have more than 40% of their officers be white males. It would be hard to conclude that white males are being discriminated against.

    Just because a certain % of a sex/race is part of a population, doesn't mean that % also matches up with the % pursuing the job. The % of females pursuing jobs in law enforcement is no where near the % of the female population. That alone is enough to skew the results.

    I'm not going to get into a sociological debate here, as a) its not the place, b) I don't have the documentation I'd want to back it up, but there are a lot more factors than overall population.

    Kinda hard to hire people who don't qualify, or if they do they have the attitude that they will start out in the unit they pick... ala Vice was a big choice when Miami Vice was a big tv show, now it is Crime Scene or forensics.... or they will take their marbles and go home.

    You can't just throw the "whites are overrepresented because they are the priviledged class" stink bomb without getting some reaction.

    Hi. My name is gringoscott. I'm a middle class white heterosexual male. I live in California. That is how I was born. I am discriminated against daily because of conditions that I have no control over.

    Do you have ANY idea how many scholarships, loans, and grants I am unable to apply for simply due to the above factors? My parents raised me to believe that I am no better than anybody else. Everyone is equal, and is to be treated as such. Thus, when I graduated high school, my parents expected me to make my own way in life. Granted, they helped out when I needed it, but I'm doing it on my own.

    The fact that I walk into an interview and I am automatically categorized makes my stomach turn. The idea that my application may be dropped in the garbage after I walk out the door because my skin color and anatomical parts aren't PC enough for the prospective employer makes my face (yes, it's Irish) redden with anger.

    I have never in my life judged a person by their skin color or gender because that's how I was raised, yet according to society I am single-handedly keeping minorities of all types down. I am, after all, a middle class white heterosexual male, right?

    It goes either way in the fire department. Some departments have been sued by white guys who didn't get hired, and the white guys won. Other times, departments have been ordered by the courts to hire more minorities (either directly or indirectly).

    Personally, I don't give a hoot. I just want to see the best person for the job hired. If that means that a class with 50 slots has 50 white males in it, so be it. If that means that a class with 50 slots has 50 green aliens with six eyes in it, then so be it. Don't hire the people who are the best candidates for a job, within a given race or gender. Hire the people who are the best candiates for the job, PERIOD.

    As for outside of the hiring realm... I was trying to go to nursing school. I found lots of "minoritiy" scholarships. If I were of African descent, Asian descent, Native American descent, whatever else, I would have qualified. However, I'm not. The mere fact that I was a male who wanted to be a nurse (and only 6% of nurses are men) was not enough to qualify me as a minority. One of only 6%, and I'm not a minority?

    Well, this stuff is becoming more and more apparent up here in Canada. I mean, there are information sessions for police departments being held for women only, and men are being turned away at the door?

    I understand that the departments want diversity, but being racist/sexist isn't the way to do it. I truly hope that they realize this by the time I can apply, or I will not be wasting my time up here in Canada for very long.

    Its not whether or not a diverse police department has its benefits or not, its whether or not less qualified candidates are being hired over more qualified candidates based on their sex or race.
