hey guys, how are ya..listen i have a few questions...i took the nypd test back in november of 2006..i passed with a 87..is that even good enough? ive been wanting to be a cop since i was very young and always had that on my mind for a career..im 21 in college for my degree in criminal justice..i failed my first nypd test when i first got out of highschool...in the year 2005 i had an argument with my mother and she called the cops on me because i was threating her and her boyfreind...the cops came and said i had two choices...to either go to jail and get a domestic violence charge or they would bring me to see a "doctor"..well i ended up in a psych ward for four days!! i was diagnost with "bipolar diorder" ...they released me and i saw a pschiatrist for about a month...they put me on medication and soon after i dropped the medication and seeing the pschiatrist because i knew for a fact they didnt diagnos me right...#2 my parents had recently divorced and i was going thru some tough times and i jus yelled at my mother and her boyfreind...#3 there was no arrest..and no charges..#4 i am sooo nervous that when they do a background check that i am going to be disqualified because of neggative character issues.....i recently sent a letter to my hospital requaesting medical records...im still awaiting there arival to see what is in there...when i was admitted to the hospital, i was told everything is "confidential" and nobody can obtain the record...not even the "law enforcement" ...i find that to be bull..i mean i have an excellent personality and get along with people great....should i kiss my dreams goodbye or what?

I'm not a cop, but i am almost 100% sure that will not stop you from being a cop. And I know most departments you have to get a 80 on to pass so im sure you passed it, call the NYPD up and ask the person in charge of hiring.

The psych is going to come up whether it be in your background or your psych exam. You WILL have to furnish the records from your psych stay. Confidentiality doesnt apply when you go for an LEO job, basically they typically make you sign a waiver letting them access everything they need to about you. I'm not on with NYPD but I am pretty sure most agencies have the same rules and they WILL find out you have been commited for 4 days so disclose it, get the records and hope for the best.

I am processing with nypd right now, You do have hope if you can show that you have a stable mind. They will tell immediatly after your psych exam if you should be a cop. You absolutely need to disclose everything because if you don't, IT WILL come up and IT WILL disqualify you from any LE job because you were dishonest. It all comes down to who is fit for the job, they will find out if they can trust that you have matured since then, I hope you have because you will find yourself in stressful situations and they want to know that you won't explode on the perp for something they say or do.
    Got my call!

First of all if you want to become a cop write full sentences and in paragraph form. Professional and much easier to read.

It doesn't matter if it confidential or not, the NYPD will find out. Be honest and tell the truth. If you don't mention it, they will consider it as lying which will be a DQ. This incident happened back in 2005, I'm afraid that it is not enough time to prove that you have matured. When do you plan on going into the academy?

I would suspect that time and maturity are your best frends about now. You will likley need both to overcome this. Be 1000% honest about what happened.

Have you considered paying your own way to see a shrink for an eval ? Let him/her give you a professional opinion as to what they think you are ( or are not ) suitable of doing.

First: To help your test scores, get BARON'S POLICE OFFICER EXAM. It got me into the 9x.xx percentile. It is a lot like the harder examinations.

Two: Research the "Americans with Disabilities Act". Police Departments I have seen follow it (seeing how it is a federal law)! There might be something in there regarding your past diagnosis. My understanding is that if you can pass (competitively) all the hiring process steps, disabilities matter not.

Some police departments care more about certain things than others. Definitely be honest! Alot of people get dropped for attempting to hide stuff that wasn't a huge deal anyways. If you are asked about what you mentioned here, tell them! (but explain it, don't beat around the bush, that makes it looks like you are not divulging it all.

What concerns me is that you were in the psych ward for 4 days. Obviously something was wrong if they kept you that long. Second you said you stopped going to the psychiatrist and took yourself off the medication because you knew you were misdiagnosed. How do you know this? If you are self-diagnosing that can terribly backfire. Also if a psychologist or psychiatrist diagnosed you with bi-polar then to the best of my knowledge this condition doesn't just disappear and since you took yourself off the medication is scary to me! I dunno bud, I hate to say it but I really think you may want to look at other career choices. Or maybe come back to NYPD when at least 10 years have passed since that incident and make sure you go incident free. Keep in mind I am not a LEO, I am simply a current applicant with NYPD and by going through the process I am passing on my knowledge to you. Take it for what its worth
