In my personal experience, I have dropped myself from a few hiring processes for both police, corrections, reserves, and other related positions. I have gone through other agencies that have asked me what positions I have gone out for and why I did not complete the rest of the hiring process, and I have never yet seen a negative effect, mostly, I believe, because I have had good reason to remove myself from those processes. I feel that with your family and future in mind, removing yourself from a hiring process is not an unjust thing to do. If I were an agency head, I dont think I would want to hire the single most qualified person out there if they weren't interested in the job or did not have the support they wanted.
I also do think there is a difference where you are in the process though, if you made it all the way up to one of the final tests and suddenly decided "This isn't for me." Other background investigators may wonder if you are going to pull the same thing on them, and why spend a ton of money on an applicant that is going to bail?
Either way,
Good Luck to you, I wish you the best in your endeavors.
