Red face Posted in ask a cop, then found this thread, sorry...

Hello! Here is a long story shortened up a bit. I was 18. I broke into a gas station that I worked at in the middle of the night. Smart move huh? Me and my friend walked out with about $600. <~~~MORONS!

The next day we were questioned by a Detective. By that evening I had called that Detective and my friend and I were telling him the whole story. We gave all the money back. I was sick with guilt and was not going another day with that kind of lie on my shoulders.

I plead guilty to second degree B&E. I received probation before judgement. Completed that and was not convicted. I had the entire thing expunged. I am now 5 years into a 6 year enlistment with the United States Air Force. I have a record that shines. Made all promotions early. A couple accomidation awards and a good conduct medal.

Not even a speeding ticket since my arrest at 18. I am now 28, and want to know if I am wasting my time trying to become a police officer, federal marshal, or state trooper. This is what I really want to do with my life and will probably apply anyway. I just thought I could get insight into what you guys thought.

One moment changed everything for me. What a horrible decision huh??

Anyway, thanks in advance for your thoughts.

p.s. If you feel the need, don't hold back.... I can take it LOL.

You're not going to find any different answers in here. The fact that you commited a crime, and a serious one at that, will not benefit you getting hired. Maybe you should stay in the service and make a career out of it. Just my .02

okay breaking and entering.....in your state were you charged with a felony or a misd? the fact of the matter is you COMMITTED a crime. Whether you were convicted or not, doesnt really matter. 10 years in time, yeah everyone makes mistakes. Its really a tough decision! BUT, you already made up your mind what youre going to do so i wouldnt worry what everyone on this site states towards your situation. Dont get me wrong, most will point you in the right direction, but it is you who is the controller of your destiny. Then ofcourse your BI but we wont go into that. The moral of the story is this, those who do not try do not succeed. You got factors working for you and against you. Perhaps settle and go with alittle bit more of a needy dept like the nypd or others who advertise and give tests all the time. That though, is entirely up to you!

Well I know you received a misdemeanor not a felony since you are in the service. I say man don't sweat it so much. Put in your application, if you are competitive (which I'm sure you are) they'll call you for an interview and you will have time to explain yourself. You still have a good shot, look at the factors:

    1. You were young and dumb when you committed the crime, all of us have been young and dumb at one point

    2. You've served your country with honor and dignity, showing Integrity First, Service Before Self and Excellence in All You Do! This will look really good on your resume, especially since you've been promoted early a bunch of times.

    3. You've maintained a clean record ever since!

Personally you have nothing to really worry about too much. If you had to be perfect to be a fed or cop only the moderators would be holding badges . You get your story organized so you can let them know what happened.

Also putting in a package for AFOSI isn't a bad deal. They are really looking for enlisted agents (last time I checked) so put in a package. I have a friend whose NYPD and I won't get into details but I will say your issue looks like stealing a quarter from grandma compared to some of the things he's done in the past.
