    So confused..

    I was reading all the threads about hiring process and I realized that many of you got DQ'ed from the department by using drugs or minor offenses. My question is, how do they know if you used drugs, or stolen goods?(if there is no proof). I'm trying to finish up my college degree with the CJ, and I come here often to get some motivation by seeing people getting hired but looking at the negative threads make me want to think again. I did not say that I have used drug or anything. Please do not misjudge me by this.

    I'm going to hazard a guess and say that's where the polygraph comes into play. Or, a good investigator who can tell through your behavior and mannerisms that you are lying.

    Part of becoming and being an officer is honesty and integrity so when these questions come up in an interview or a poly its BEST to be truthful about them. Any kind of deception in the interview or poly when found is most likely to result in a DQ.

    Bottom line is that they don't know, but they're very good at finding out. Chances are that they will find out and you will forever be blacklisted. If you're upfront and honest these things may keep you from a job now but probably not later (if it isn't a permanent DQ that is).

    Some agencies will go and talk to people you went to school with, whether or not you identified them as friends, etc, etc, neighbors in your old houses, etc, etc, etc.

    If it were fair, then we'd have just as many idiots/dirtbags with guns and badges as we do people who have led a clean and honest life...for the most part.

    If you have a problem fessing up to anything you've done in your past, I think you'd better look into a different career.

    A good background investigation will reveal it. BI's will work past your references and start contacting people you knew and not just talk to the people you coached to give you a good reference. A good BI won't need a polygraph (which aren't used in some places.)

    Be 100% honest, hope for the best and see what happens. One thing is for sure, if you don't apply you'll never know.
