Thanks BigSexy for you response and I did not feel that you were picking on me. My stating that I am a Black male was not done to gain favor or influence. I am a Military Man and Public Servant for the City of New York and probably come in contact or deal with as many "ethnic groups, races, religions, genders, political parties and jurisdictions" than you or any one else. I do not use my race as bargaining point or crutch get anything I want. I would like to think I get it on the positive content of my character. You wrote "The sooner we start defining ourselves by who we are, instead of by the color of our skins, our ethnic groups, our religious or political affiliations, the better we'll be as a society." in my opinion thats a partially correct statement because we are defined by "who we are" partially by race. As far as better off as a society we should recognize all the differences in people, but be smarter as a whole not to categorize anyone by them. To be more respectful, and sensitive to the differences in people would go more farther than to just not admit whats really there. Again thanks for your post and I hope that I expressed myself without offense.

To LA5150 regarding Finn's comment. I believe Finn does have an unusual way of expressing himself but I do not believe he is offensive. In a weird way I agree with him...............I think????

The latest thing being a weapons charge in 2005? Multiple arrests and tickets don't show that you've wanted to be a police officer your whole life. Your paralegal and military experience is positive but your traffic/criminal record is long and consistent. I can't imagine you would pass a background investigation even for a large police department.

It sounds like there is more to the weapons charge that you're not telling us. What state was this in, what is the Misd it was reduced to, what are the real circumstances? If this happened in New York were you charged with Felony count of Criminal Possession of a Weapon 3* and plead to a Misd count of CPW 4*?

The NYPD allows you to to apply no later than your 41st birthday (35 without active military service) You said you are going though the review process with the NYPD. Are you saying that you are a current applicant that was placed "on review"? What position did you apply for with NYC DCAS?

Your chances of getting into law enforcement are slim to none, in my opinion.
Thanks for you input Vengeance05 and to answer some of the questions you asked I start with a statement. I have wanted to become a Police Officer all my life but made a lot of bonehead, youthful mistakes. I blame a lot to youth, but accept all responsibility because I should have known better. Hindsight is 20/20 and had I known what I know now, I would have accomplished all my goals by now.

To try and answer your question I was arrested in Nassau, NY for weapon possession (a felony) and I pled to a misdemeanor. I don't know the degrees offhand, but what you wrote sounds correct. To add more details than in my original statement it was found in the attic by my girlfriend and instead of taking it to the Police Station that night I put it in the yard. I was running late for work and decided to take it to the Police Station in the morning. I didn't know how long that process would take, and didn't want to risk being late. When the morning came and I got home she and I got into a dispute and she told me to take the gun with me (something that I had planned to do anyway) or she would call the police to report it. A neighbor heard this dispute and called the Police except he added things that was not said. When the Police arrived they found the weapon in my yard where I put it the night before and arrested me. After I was arrested she realized that she was wrong to raise her voice and mention gun but it was too late. After all she was the one who actually discovered it. I only moved it to the yard because I thought I was making my home safer. I never owned a weapon in my life (except in the military).

As far as the NYPD is concerned I took the test a few years ago when I was within the age limit (Jan of 2007 I turned 42) and was on review all that time. It took years to get to the DCAS point. My position with DCAS is over, I didn't find a lawyer within my budget and my character witnesses couldn't make the "final" date they gave me. I felt I couldn't properly put up a reasonable defense and withdrew. That being said I'm currently seeking Departments with no age limit and continuing to pursue my dream. I know my chances are slim to none but with that slim possibility comes hope and thats what I'm riding on now.

Thanks for your response it was greatly appreciated.

Thanks for your reply Cntryboy0531 and to answer your question the incident happened in Nassau, New York (Long Island) and the handgun was not mine meaning it was not registered to me. Possession of a handgun/firearm of any type without registration is a felony in New York. I am not a Felon and basically thats the story. Thanks for time and input.

Even though it was plead to a Misd. you were still charged with a Felony. It's not the same as a conviction of a felony, but you will most likely not be getting into Law Enforcement anytime soon with that recent conviction on your record. The only thing I can recommend is putting more time in between the incident, and applying (Your going to need years), and try again.

Possession of an illegal handgun is a Misd. There had to be an aggravating factor to make it a Felony.

He is past the age requirement to reapply with NYPD.

I am in the LAPD out of town expedited process now. You will have to travel to LA twice. The first will involve:

    - written essay test, physical ability test (day one)
    - background interview, polygraph (day two)
    - oral boards, psychological written (day three)

If successfull on this first endeavor, you will be invited back for another three days of testing (midical exam, psych interview, others).

If you have more questions about expedited testing, PM me.
