    Germany Redlight district/prostitution?

I'm sure paying for sex, is one of the questioned asked in the personal history questionaire.

I enlisted in the Army at 17 years old and did 5 years active duty as a 11c infantry mortarman with a rank of E-5 Sergeant. My first duty station was germany and being a 18 year old fresh private living in germany it was pretty exciting.

My first weekend in Germany, my platoon gathered all the new soldiers and took us to the redlight district. For are initiation to the platoon, we had to atleast experience redlight once. Some of you might think this sounds crazy but I hope some of you priors can understand my situation. It was a tradition in the company. I only did it once but know a few soldier that went pretty much every weekend. Prostitution is legal and a tax paying profession in Germany and I know that it doesn't matter, I still paid for some love. I do take full responsibility of my actions.

I served two deployments to Kosovo and one deployment to Iraq. I did leave active duty but still serve in the reserves and currently going to college and won't apply to any Law enforcement department until I graduate with a bachelor's degree. I will be about 28- 29 years old so about 10 years would have passed.

I know that paying for sex, is paying for sex. I also did try marijuana 4 times when I was 15 though 16 years old. I just want to know would this DQ me and do I have a chance in Law enforcement or should I just find another career. Any info would be greatly appreciated Thanks

Edit: I will be applying at the westcoast states ie California, Nevada, Oregon and Washington state.

They tried to tell me the same thing and I still made it out of the club without having paid for sex.

Were you stationed in germany also. I didn't know that the navy had bases there.

Your right they didn't force me to do anything. In my unit, the first night you arrive, the platoon rushes in your room and hog ties you with 550 cord and 100 mile tape, shave your head and do a few things that I should not mention. This was all in good fun and after ward the platoon welcomed me into the platoon.

Now being 18 years old grunt in a infantry unit and telling your buddies that you don't want to go to the red light district after they welcome you into the platoon. Your just asking for some trouble, I'm human, 18 years old, red light ladies were beautiful, it was legal and I didn't really see a problem with it at that time. I think half the base was at the red light to be honest. Were grunts not saints.

In the states you have to be 21 years old to drink but in Germany I think it is 16 years old, I was able to buy alcohol at the Px or class 6 shop, how can the U.S government allow me to buy hard liquor and be only 18 years old, did I break any laws, it's funny when we have Battalion parties and your Battalion Commander, Company Commander is buying free shots for everyone. Also I do believe some place in Nevada has a redlight district.

Now I'm not saying the act that I did was justified and I do take full responsibility but I think there might be a difference between going to the red light in Germany and picking up a street hooker in downtown Los Angeles whos on crack

Like so many of the questions posted, a lot of it depends on the department and, more importantly I think, the type of background investigator and chief you get. For example, if you get a BI and/or Chief that's been in the military, or is just somewhat open minded, then you should be okay, however, if you get a bible-thumping moral highgrounder...well...maybe not okay.

True, prostitution is prostitution, but since it's been just a one time thing, and you'll have around 10 years behind you, I don't think it'll be that big of an issue. Just keep doing what you're doing..fess up and be honest and you should be just fine.

    dplaza thanks for your reply.

I understand that it depends on the department and hope they can understand my story. I do plan on applying at LVMPD, LAPD, LASD, Huntington, orange and a few other Socal departments and hopefully one would take me.

It's a small hurdle but you just need to be truthful about it during your background. You should be fine.
Eunice: A .22? Oh you've gotta be kidding me. That's like bringing a knife to a gunfight.
Detective Greenly: Yeah, or bringing a really small gun... to a gunfight.

You probably also didn't know that the Navy has ground forces which protect all types of assets to include military aircraft which we also have. They tend to land on air bases. Have any of those there?

That aside I should also point out that Germany isn't the only country with legal prostitution.

    Red en route.

The drinking age for military personnel stationed outside of the U.S. is 18 unless made more restrictive by a SOFA or your unit commander.

Opposed to a trafficked person forced into slavery, perhaps on some other type of drug? Does the Army not have a Trafficking In Persons training requirement?

H.R. Cufnstuf don't talk to me like I'm a 18 year old punk, roger. I know that the Navy does have ground forces, Military police, seals, sea bees etc. so don't tell me what I know and don't know. I was just asking a question if the Navy had bases in Germany, it wasn't in anyway talkin sh*t. I only seen Army and Airforce bases in Germany.

Do you think I'm that stupid to believe that Germany is the only place in the world that has legal prostitution. Of course other countries have Legal prositution.

I'm not saying what I did was right but I guess your Mr perfect with a clean and perfect background. You should be a chaplain. Are you even a LEO?

I just checked with our background guys. The one time incident in Germany would not DQ you from being hired on here.
This career is not a sprint, it is a marathon.

Cat Doc thanks for your reply and thats great to hear

You know I'm not justifying what I did and do take full responsibility. Prositution is prositution but just wanted to know if BI's would understand my story and hopefully one of the larger metro departments would understand.

The only problem I really see with it is that it showed you will bend from social pressure to do something you don't think is right. But, because it happened so long ago I'm sure you have matured and aren't susceptible to that kind of pressure anymore.

Otherwise, the situation you described doesn't seem like it will prevent you from being hired on. Just be sure to mention it during the background investigation.
I used to care. Now I take a pill for that.

Their was some social pressure but to be honest being 18 year old kid, my girlfriend at the time broke up with me, living in a different country, serving in the military all this was new to me and very exciting, I wasn't really forced or pressured too much but after the experience it wasn't for me and did it only once. This did happpen along time ago and would never do something like this now or have done anything like it since. Never got into trouble in the military or civilian world, no criminal background, don't drink, smoke, FICO credit score was 805 this month. I Made E-5 in less than 3 years of service. Currently going to college majoring in business.

I do plan on mentioning it during the background, even if they DQ or not hire me. This might sound corny but I truly believe in the Army core values Integrity, honor, loyalty, duty, respect, selfless service and personal courage. Things that the Law enforcement also believes in.
