    LAPD Academy

Just wondering if any of the LAWA officers have started the LAPD academy or If anyone knows when they'll start there?

Hey since we are talking a bit about the academy I have a few questions. What are the hours of the academy for LAPD? I read that you should be there betweeen 5am-515am. When do they let us out? Just curious, because I live 45 mins away without traffic. I also read somewhere if you cant do 37 push-upsin a minute, and 40 something sit ups in a minute then you will be kicked out. Is this true? I only can do 25 push-ups, sit-ups im fine.

I can only speak about what it was like when I was there a few years back:

We started at 0600 hours, but had to be there and dressed by 0530 for uniform inspection by our class leader, then colors (flag detail) at about 0545. I've heard that this has changed due to some whiney beyotches who griped about coming in early and doing things on "their" time.

We typically got out at about 1430 hours, but I still got slammed by traffic on the 405 freeway (north). If you stay for remediation, you will be there for an extra 2 hours. Your best bet is to find someone to commute with--it makes the drives a little more bearable.

You will not be kicked out for not being able to do that many sit-ups or push-ups during the PFQ's. You only need to past the POST test, and if you fail that then yes, you will be kicked out. But the POST test is a piece of cake, so don't sweat that.

Otherwise, they can yell at you all they want and tell you how sad you are for not being able to do "x" amount of pull-ups or not being able to run faster, but they can't kick you out.
I used to care. Now I take a pill for that.

Wow, thats nice to know. I forgot when I got it, but a paper stated that they will test us on your push ups, sit ups, and running on your first week. Also, in that paper it stated the number that you had to do in a minute. Oh, and I heard that we have red cards now that we can pull out if we are feeling stressed or too much under pressure. I guess when we pull out the red card,we cant be yelled at or bothered for 15 minutes.

Hey can I borrow that red card because today while I was in a foot pursuit of a duche bag I felt stressed out, especially with the rain making it really hard to run.

If thats true than if anyone, I mean anyone pulls that card out they should be tased. O and if you do pull it out EVERYONE will know within 15 minutes. I do mean the entire department. They will let you know when you get to your division (if you graduate) for your first day of probation and every other day after that. If you think that the academy was too stressful? Stand by...

    God I love this department

You have GOT to be effing kidding me.

Yeah, next time I'm feeling stressed out in the field by a gangster talking smack, I'll just wave that fricking red card in his face and I'll sit in a corner for 15 minutes doing yoga.

WTF are they trying to teach the recruits by this--how to give up when things get tough?! Nobody with an ounce of integrity or personal pride should ever pull one of those stupid things out.

LAPD4ME is right--this dept is like high school, and the gossip flies faster than light speed. Everyone will know who the wuss is who uses those things.

    Uh??

This cannot be for real, can it?? I had heard that the training division was adopting a new method - one that was taken from Canada that uses more of a college atmosphere - but this above and beyond, and in my opinion, UNSAT!

Yep, I thought this couldnt be true either. I have mentioned it to many of the police officers/sheriff's deputys and they too have heard of this. They just start laughing. I remember one officer said, "what next, coloring books and crayons". I was told they have made the academy easyier because they need officers so bad they cant afford to have anyone drop out.

The red card thing is bs. Unless it started in some of the recent classes I wouldn't buy into that. According to the Training Division CO things will be changing around here in the new 01-07 class that starts Monday. They will be in a new pilot program and have a different academy experience then I did. The new CO seems pretty intent on making the discipline side of the academy a LOT tougher which should be a move for the better.

Academy hrs are usually 0600-1530 BUT that changes from time to time with later start times and night rotations.

yeah they said that you can sign up for whatever class you think you might need. There are some elective courses as well: How to get out of writing a T/C, How to make an arrest/report take 10 hours, and how to show yourself out to station the last two hours of watch.

College my ***....people need to suck it up. Earn it!

They did, and it's no wonder that so many recruits coming out are so damn timid! Maybe FTO's and P2's bitched about it enough that they finally got the hint that coddling poor little recruits does NOT make them better police officers. You aren't being trained to go work at Burger King, for God's sake. A little discipline and physical training never hurt anyone.

I personally think the "college" approach breeds a bad mindset among boots, at the expense of nurturing a warrior/survivor spirit. Walking a footbeat through the projects is NOT like strolling through a college campus, and there are no "second attempts" if some asshat decides to thrash you.
I used to care. Now I take a pill for that.

I agree!! I dont think we should be able to choose our classes. On the streets we are not going to be able to choose what situations we want and dont want to be in. I may be young, but I definately dont want the "easy route". I want to be fully trained, and properly. Im just afraid about my backgrounds because one of my old friends taht I put on my personal referrals moved away and I dont talk to him anymore. I filled out my Backgrounds packet over the summer. In the summer my friend started to turn into an alcoholic, and he kinda strayed away from my friends and I. Since the summer I heard he moved too. I told my new background investigator that, he hasnt responded yet. My new background investigator said that 2 of my referrals never sent in their letters to my old BI before I failed my first oral. So I hope that because of him not turning in the referral letter will DQ me.
