    Green to Blue

I am currently serving on active duty in the US. Marines, I am scheduled to take my physical and psy test in Febuary, I am hoping to make the July '07 academy. My concern is they pay for the NYPD how will I afford the cost of living in NY? Any advice will be appreciated. Thanks.

If you have the GI Bill, that is an extra 1100 a month that is tax free. I think you get that until you are off probation too, so your base pay would of increased in the process.

    Thanks Ferrara.

Does the NYPD offer any sort of college benefits? I'd hate to use my GI Bill to afford food LOL. Especially, if that's all the help I'm gonna get for school.

    Jackson,

ferrara is right about the $1100 tax free per month, but only while you're in school full time. Once you're done with the academy and hired on, you'll have to check to see if the NYPD is set up to have the VA pay you OJT pay. I don't know the exact rules, but basically it's a benefit you can use for up to one year in a new hire position and it's a bit less than the school benefit, about $945 or so for the first 6 months and then going down after that. I do know one of the requirements is that you be supervised over 50% of the time and that the training has to last at least six months.

As far as using the GI Bill for groceries and such, well, that is a pain. But don't forget that if you don't use it within 10 years of getting out, you lose it. If you plan on going to college with it later, then I'd try to save it, otherwise, use it up. You've earned it!

Here are some links that I looked up for you, hope they help...

    Pay rates from gibill.va.gov

Best of luck to you from a former SSgt now a retired Capt in the academy myself!
