    Are you KIDDING me?!

    Okay, so here's the deal:

I'm deep into the background process with an agency, everything looks perfect, hearing great things from my BI, all that. BI calls my mom, they talk for a while, he asks her for my biggest weakness. She says that she's my mom, so she is at an obvious loss for an answer to that one. He presses her, and eventually she caves and gives him an answer. She tells him that sometimes when I get frustrated I can be less than thorough. He asks for an example. She says that when I was taking a Calculus II class over the summer sometimes I'd get frustrated and not finish the assignment. The rest of the conversation is irrelevant, so I'll cut to the point.

    1) What she said is false. Not false because I don't want anyone to tell my BI, but because the said events never occurred. I got a B in the class, and it was an intensive-format summer class.
    2) My parents and I have an excellent relationship, but my mom volunteered the worst info of anyone that my BI has contacted.

So this is partly a rant because I am absolutely dumbfounded, but if anyone has any thoughts, I'd love to hear them. The idea of calling my BI to defend myself has occurred, but I think maybe that would just make a worse impression.

RELAX! Also, don't get angry at your mom since that will make matters worse at home. That's what BIs do, they want to dig up all the dirt they can, and then assess you as a WHOLE. If your good traits outweigh the bad, then you should be fine. Will that guarantee that you get hired? No. Everyone has their shortcomings. Just wait until you hear back from your BI, and DO NOT contact your BI since that will complicate things, and it might appear that you are overly defensive. Just chill out, relax, and be patient. Good luck.

    Good advice above.

Your mom was asked a question and gave an honest answer. Parents, friends, and employers don't see us as we see ourselves. Get used to it.

I worked as a BI. I liked to ask this: if they called the police 5 years from now for a serious problem, and this applicant showed up as the assigned officer, would they feel that their problem would be handled in a fair and proper fashion?

Continue your quest and good luck. You have some maturing to do, so stay out of trouble, pick your friends wisely, listen to others, think twice before speaking about others, do well in school, and pay your bills. As tatersalad posted: patience - good things will happen.

If you prefer to nit-pick details, be self-centered, and blame others, you should consider law school.

Your mom hasn't sunk you. You're going to be fine.

On the list of things which bounce people out of the hiring process, 'didn't finish a Calculus assignment in summer school' ranks somwhere down around 'occasionally wears a brown belt with black shoes'.

Let not your heart be troubled. And hug your mother; someday you'll wish you had more often.
