Question Prostitution - Will I fail background check?

I am interested in applying at the LAPD and LASD. When I was outside the country on vacation I paid for 5 massages at shops a few years ago.

Also I stole a piece of candy from a store when I was 5 or 6 years old, do I need to tell them about this?

Will I fail the background check? Do you have to be truthful about everything and disclose everything?

Of course not... why would they ask you to disclose everything? Its not like they're checking your background or anything.

It would actually be a good idea to buff up the resume while you're at it. Mark on there that you spent 10 years with an international police force (just make one up so they cant check it).

Just about every cop does this to get the job because they are hard to come by.

LaceyExplorer, I agree with you to be honest. I feel embarrassed talking about the prostitution and also I didn't want to take any chances on not getting the job. So you are saying I have a better chance at getting the job if I am completely truthful about everything?

I take it by the title of this thread you got the "happy ending", i.e. you paid for sexual services at the massage shop? If this is correct, it is indeed partaking in prostitution, and will likely get you a DQ.

If you have to ask this question, you have no business working in law enforcement or any position of public trust.

A DQ means that I am disqualified? Some people have a hard time meeting girls. What if I was young and stupid and made a mistake?

I apologize about these quotes "Do you have to be truthful about everything and disclose everything?" "So you are saying I have a better chance at getting the job if I am completely truthful about everything?"

I try really hard to be an honest person and do not like to lie. Prostitution is the only item in my background that would cause problems, I would like to become a law enforcement officer for the excitement, challenge, and to help innocent people from getting taken advantage of. What are my chances of becoming one?

So you believe this gives you an entitlement above others to break the law? That alone shows your maturity level and morals, and they aren't to the level needed to be a LEO. And yes, DQ = disqualification. LE work is not cut out for habitual offenders, which you are by your continued use of prostitution services.

I'm not trying to demean you or berate you, but you WILL be DQ'ed if you've partaken in prostitution services. Apply if you wish, but don't say I didn't warn you ahead of time.

Your chances are zero. Again, I'm not saying this to be demeaning or belittling, but that's a fact of life, and law enforcement requires those with integrity and honesty. "Trying" to be honest won't cut it. If you're not honest naturally, you have no business working in LE, and the process is designed to screen out individuals like yourself. There are other ways to help out innocent people, such as volunteering your time to charitable organizations, but I'm afraid law enforcement is likely to be competely closed off to you due to your past transgressions.

Why is smoking marijuana illegal, and you can still become a police officer with this?

Human beings are not perfect, I am sure there are some current cops that did worse things than prostitution.

Technically prostitution was legal in the country I did it in (outside the United States) - so I did not break any laws.

Exactly. We're telling you the way it is because you asked. If our answers frighten you, then you should cease asking scary questions.

You are allowed to experiment with marijuana. Excessive experimentation (ie >10 times) or recent useage will disqualify a person from every agency I am aware of. Some agencies will DQ the first time you use it.

It is entirely possible that a current police officer has commited an offense worse than using a prostitute and gotten away with it. This does not mean that they would not be removed from the position upon discovery or that, had the investigator discovered the act, that the officer would have been hired in the first place. Using the whiny "johnny did it" logic will not gain you anything.

Child prostitution is legal in some countries. The US has a policy of prosecuting for that offense when the participant returns to the US. this has been reported in most major newspapers. Simply because you did not break the law in XXX country does not mean you can not be held accountable in this one.
