Wink Law Enforcements/SRT Teams with in the Federal

    Hello,

Some of you might already knew that I got a job offer to work as a Import Specialist... Lately, I been doing a lot of research about the federal jobs, and I found out alot of issues.... I need some help!! :D

    1. Is it true about the retirement that only law enforemenets can retire after 20 yrs of service, and collects the pay right away? Even if you work inside the CIA, FBI as a.... IT guy or Office guy... you can't retire unitl you reach 65 yrs old?

    2. If that's true, I should think about moving into a Law Enforcement field right? Since I have 4 yrs of service with the US Marine Corps...

    3. If I realy want to go to the Law Enforement field, which Department would allow me to join them without a degree?

    4. What kind of Departmens have special teams such as SRT/ SWAT?

    5. What is the requirement to join the SRT/SWAT?

    Thanks
    Ken

Not the way you posted, it is dependant on the classification of your retirement. Most federal law enforcement are under the "6C" classification. If you are are then you can collect your pension as long as you are 50 years old with 20 years of duty, or at any age with 25 years of service. I included a link at the OPM website...go to page 20 for more info: http://www.opm.gov/forms/pdfimage/RI90-1.pdf

This does not apply to non-LEO support staff. They are on a completely different system.

Why not get into a career that you actually want to do?

If your wanting to go federal, then your behind the curb. Most 1811 positions require a college degree.

The FBI, Secret Service, U.S. Marshal, and ATF come to mind on specialized units that are comparable to SWAT Teams.

First they give you a coloring book and see if you can color within the lines, then you have to sit and watch an entire episode of Oprah without crying; finally if you can read a "Curious George" book, and not get lost in the hard vocabulary, then you have what it takes. :D

On a serious note, the requirements differ from agency to agency, but you must have a few year of experience before you can apply.

    +1 to what Nole said.

To elaborate a little, the FBI has several levels of SWAT. There is SWAT, enhanced SWAT and then HRT (their national team). Similarly, we (the U.S. Marshals) have 2 levels.. SRT and SOG (our national team).

Finally... Customs used to have an SRT. I am not sure if it still exists since the restructuring into ICE. Border Patrol (non-1811) has BORTAC, which is a good tac team.

You need not be an 1811 for the Secret Service CAT team.

Department of Energy also has tactical teams... adn they are not 1811s.

I'll think of more later, I am sure.

Thanks for both of your information, but what is 1811s? Also, which of these Departments have positions in NYC? I don't want to relocate to somewhere thats too far away from NYC... and since I am still on my way on getting a degree (maybe within 2yrs..) Which department would accept/grand me in?

    THanks for the help,
    Ken

Since you asked about federal positions, 1811 is the classification for federal criminal investigators (who go by other official titles, such as Special Agent, US Marshal, Inspector, etc.).

If you want to work as an 1811, you're going to need to be more geographically mobile than just NYC. Granted most fed agencies have large offices in NYC, but that doesn't mean they won't need you to - and you'll have to comply with - move elsewhere in the US. There are some exceptions to this rule (some smaller IG's come to mind), but that's the minority in 1811 hiring and agency requirements.

An 1811 is a federal Criminal Investigator... also called a Special Agent.

Nearly all of the federal agencies mentioned have offices in NYC. However, you really don't go into the federal system without plans (ar at least knowing the possibility) of relocating. Also, FWIW, in terms of federal agencies, NYC SUCKS! Most people cannot get away from the NY offices fast enough. I speak from experience.

While some positions may not require a degree to get hired, you will find it VERY difficult to be competitive wo get hired without one.

    Dude,

Just to clarify, you dont have a degree but want to get grandfathered in, and you want to choose what city you work at! I hate to burst the bubble but you have unrealistic expectations from the job. The good thing is you want to stay in NYC, but even that is not concrete.

Get your degree, get work experience, and apply but keep focus that you may be expected to work anywhere in the U.S.

    Good luck.

Hate to be the one who ruins the party, but instead of posting multi-facied questions about what you want. How about using the search button, that Realpolice has so generously provided us.

You've been here since July and BIG suspects haven't once used it. Now, upon searching some of the threads, which already cover a lot of your topics, and you still have questions requiring more or better detail, feel free to ask them then.

Agents are a dime a dozen and you should be able to go down to the local office, tell them you were in the USMC AND that you recently got accepted as AN IMPORT SPECIALIST (that is a very hard position to get and all the 1811's want to get it so it'll go a long way) and see what they'll offer you in the relm of 1811 jobs... They should offer you a job straight away and probably get you directly onto an Entry Team, SRT, SWAT unit. GET OFF the frigging SWAT thing, you've posted about it over and over... IF you get accepted as an 1811 that'll be the first hurdle, then worry about the other stuff but don't expect it immediatly. Entry Team personell are well trained people that have some time on the job so that your bosses know you're serious about the job and not just wanting to play high speed cowboy.

    Thanks Chewy,

My gutz is telling me to go with what you said, this maybe a chance for me to become a 1811... thanks man!

Why does everyone want to be SWAT?

My agency has a SET team, but I suspect the use of said team is minimal.
I want to join just so I get to play with the fancy 3rnd burst AR.:D

The National Park Service as a SRT. We may not be as cool as ATF or the Marshalls, but NPS still gets some nice toys.

National Park Service is within the Federal right? Do you have to take any exam to get in? ;)
