the PAT is nothing to worry about

you will probably pass that what you should be worrying about is the oral panel interview... thats what cuts the most people during the process

in my list, i recall there were about 1100 applicants, after written test there was 800, after PAT there was still 700 then after oral interview about 300

then after that, if you manage to pass the 3 person oral panel interview, it is ranked so if your not in the top 50 expect long long waits before getting a call about your background

then you have background process which goes in order of oral interview rank
(if they even consider reviewing your packet... i heard stories of people waiting 6 months or more before getting assigned a background investigator)

then polygraph, medical, and oral psychological testing before getting into an academy

yes, sfpd is on a hiring frenzy with as much as 5 academy classes with 50 people (about 250 recruits) per year but dont be a fool

"so I thought I'd throw my name into the mix."

good luck but you cant treat this process like a game. you need to show you REALLY want it

The PAT is not very difficult. I fell down in the middle of the obstacle course and had to do the extra exersizes. Then the pedal counter on the bike I was on broke and didn't count about 1/3 of my repetitions, but I still passed.
There are always going to be staggeringly stupid people in the world. What separates you from them is your reactions when you encounter them.

Trust me, this is no game for me. I've been hitting the gym every day, studying up on interview skills, studying every newspaper article about the department, disecting every page of the web site, talking to people who live their about the city, correlating street names I read about with mapquest. This is the top choice for me. The pay isn't the best in the area, and lord know the SF press certainly doesn't like the local cops much. But I can't explain how drawn I feel to the city. Kinda strange, actually.

Thanks to all for the great info and kind words!
