At what point in the process is the poly done?

Hello,

Just a quick question.

I am going into the Pre-Service prorgram to become a reserve officer. I have completed the ALERT testing, been fingerprinted, had a backround check, and passed in all other needed forms such as the medical form. Now I am waiting for the start date of the academy, which is comming up in 2 weeks, and I have not had to do the polygraph exam yet. I was under the impression that this was done PRE-entry. Does this vary depending on departments?

This will vary by department. The ones I am familiar with will do the written and physical agility tests first to eliminate the majority of people. Those who survive the first two will submit a packet to begin the background. During this time the poly is scheduled and conducted.

I have mine tomorrow, it is done at my prospective department right before the BI but after the oral board and physical. Their perspective is they dont want to invest a detectives time on the background of someone who is going to fail the poly

Depends on the department and their procedures. Most depts do the poly early in the process before the investigation.

Generally after you get a conditional offer of employment, due to many state laws related to polygraphs. But it does vary. I did mine a few weeks ago. Fun stuff right there

Just before you get a letter that says, "Thank you for considering employment with our department. At this time, however, we have determined that you are no longer eligible to continue in the process." :D

Well I can state that in Miami-Dade PD it is one of the first steps through the many. I applied, then had orientation, then had interview with my BI, and at that point I was given a paper with my appointment for my polygraph. Remember if you go there and have a guilty conscience YOU WILL FAIL. If you go in nervous and tell the truth, the probability of you passing is SLIM TO NONE. Be truthful and you will do just fine. My appointment is for Oct. 17. Good luck to you and myself.
