So I just Signed up for the LVMP Exam......

And I live in New York, they are giving the Las Vegas Metropolitan police test in one of the local colleges near me so I decided why not and signed up for it. Its a 3 day process, first the test, then the physical and lastly the oral interview, if you pass all three i'd have to make 1 trip down to Las Vegas to complete the backround investigation.

So how many people do you think will be taking the test with me? I'd seriously be suprised if there was a dozen people there, is that even a realistic number? Is the LVMP having a hard time getting new recruits if they are widing their recruitment all way over in NY or is this normal?

BTW if your wondering why the heck am I taking the test, well there are a few reasons, first off I want to work an a area with a good amount of crime, second off I would much rather work in the city of LV then NYC because the starting pay is $20,000+ more in LV then NYC (which is extremely low), and 3rd I want to move very far away from the place I grew up (no real reason why, I just do).

So in additional to the few questions above i'll add one more... am I crazy? ;)

Sounds awesome.. I wonder they they recruit from so far away. Out here in California, I'd imagine there are plenty of people willing to make the short trip up to LV for the job... Maybe they figure if they hire from far away, the retention rate is better.................

Thanks for the heads up, I've been somewhat interested in LVMPD, but wasn't crazy about flying out there a few times to complete the whole process. Since they're condensing it into just one trip, I decided to sign up as well. Nothing wrong with having other options in case NYPD doesn't work out :p

I don't think you're crazy, Vegas is a very nice city and I had a great time when I went there last year (and that was without gambling too :p).

If you look in the Jobs section here on the forum, I posted a link to their NY exam site a few months back. Has all the info you need. I had signed up for the test, but now I'm not sure if I'll take it or not...we'll see.

I am in the final stage in testing for LVMPD....I would say there are NOT having tough times finding recruits...when i tested in LV in May there were 1,000 recruits at the testing...I think they are just looking to tap into all diffrent parts of the country to get the best possible people...they know that NYC does not pay much so they might be trying to give an out to all those people..who knows, but i do know they are not hurting for recruits...good luck...

I just had my oral boards with LVMPD yesterday. I wait 2-3 weeks to see if I passed (Im relatively sure I did) and then I turn in my background packet when they call.

I've heard many good things about the LVMPD, good luck with it.

    Just Received The Call

Good luck to all that are already in the LVMPD hiring process and those taking the NYC exam for the LVMPD. I just received my call to attend the academy.

    june test

i took the june test. passed written exam. passed physical. failed the oral board. i studied ALL the exams. talked to recruiting officer right before i took the oral board. he said i was well prepared and thought i would do great. i knew what things not to say that would put up a red flag and fail me and did everything perfect. i have 72 credit hours towards a BA in CCJ and I am enlisted in the Air National Guard. i knew my job history, how to respond to situations they asked me, was very enthusiastic and even joked with the officers. everything went smooth and i even impressed myself that i wasnt nervous at all in the oral board. yet i still failed? i think its because i had just turned 21 and look too young. I called the recruiting officer that i talked to beforehand and he seemed a little shocked. please give me your input and ask any questions that you have about the testing, my situation, etc.

I took a lot of oral boards before I got finally got hired. I too looked young, as I was only 22 at the time. The more interviews and tests you take the better you will get at it.

It also seems that every oral board you take is different. Departments have different views on things and may be narrow in their selection of officers. I would say about half of the interviews I took were laid back while the other half, the board/panel laided on the heat.

Give it some time and try again in a year or so. Sometimes places will give you feedback on the interview, that is always helpful.

I failed an oral board at the agency I have a few family members working for 4 years back. I was told I was well spoken, well versed and qualified, just too young for the street. I cant say I didnt agree with them. When i reinterviewed this year I came across as a much improved and more mature candidate and so far so good. Keep your head up!

Hard to say what they want but I believe that any lack (e.g. being/looking young) can be overcome with the right answers at the board.

One other thing I Wanted to add here. The Metro Oral Board is very very structured. Everyone gets the same questions and there are specific things that they are looking for.

Points that you need to cover in each of the situations... (Though not neccesarily right or wrong answers)

The purpose of which is to make it as objective as possible.

Something makes me doubt that there was a "Does the applicant look to young?" check box on there.
