A PROMOTION- that do not want!

I was just 'told' that I was being promoted to Sgt- which is a real surpise 'cause I never applied for the job (did not even know we had an opening). While that is great, the downside is it will take me out of patrol and put me in the jail. NOT a move I am looking foreward to. If it wasn't for the $16,000 raise I would have told the boss "Heck no! You can take that job and #$%^& *\" However, with four little boys who are getting older (and more expensive) the cash will come in very handy.

I guess I can look foreward to going back to patrol as a Sgt- but that will be about a five year wait (if noone leaves early).

I HATE THE JAIL, this is gonna suck- shoot, I'd rather dispatch again.

Sorry for the rant, thanks for reading.

I went through this a year ago, although I went from patrol officer to patrol Sgt. I still get to work traffic and I don't have to handle the nusiance calls. Glad we don't have a jail to run though. That is why we have corrections officers.

Give the poor guy a break. I can understand why you would be a little unhappy. For some, money isn't as much of an issue as enjoying what you want to do in life. I love my job, and just happen to be paid a good wage for it. I'm one of the lucky ones.
I know of a lot of people who dislike management because they can't do the job that they enjoy. My brother - a computer programmer - keeps turning down mgmt positions because he wouldn't be doing programming anymore. That's just one example.
Should I be taking offense at your dispatch comment? ;) Some of us would rather dispatch than be a cop.
Just hang in there, telcom. You never know what cards life is going to deal you. Geez, you'd never get any of our guys being promoted to Sgt after only 5 years on the force.

We are a relativly small office, with 17 sworn deputies, and 21 civilian personal (this includes all of the jailers/ communications/ records / maint. people). Only three of us are eligable for promation, the other two turned it down. They are each looking at picking up patrol Sgt in the next year due to retirements. Me, being the Jr. guy- I get 'stuck' moving to the jail. The position is a new one. We built a new jail a year ago, went from 21 beds to 60. The Chief Deputy had always run the jail before, but after a year with the new jail the Sheriff decided he needed a Sgt in there. While the raise is great, I am not thrilled about being a supervisor in the jail. It is all paperwork and not much else. At least as a patrol Sgt you have the chance to get out there and do somthing, besides order linens and meals, and listen to people complain about- well prisoners tend to complain about everything.

Upside- all days, no weekends/holidays. Big bonus- I was guarnteed the next opening on our SRT (Sheriff knew I was not happy by the move and put me ahead of the two guys that turned down the job), they do not get called out much, but the training is a good time.
