    Smoking/LEO

After reading a thread moments ago, a question popped into my head that you all might be able to answer: is smoking, or not smoking, taken into consideration during the application process? What I mean is, is a person who doesn't smoke looked upon favorably? Just a ponderance...

I'll assume you're referring to tobacco and not pot, crack, meth or any other smokable substance. So, would the fact that one chooses to not smoke tobacco be a positive factor in determining their application? It's a non-issue. It's like whether someone who chews gum would be seen negatively. As long as you can pass the PT and don't smoke in areas that prohibit it, it won't be seen as a positive or negative for an applicant.

That's exactly what I meant...and thanks for the quick reply? Guess it was a silly question.

I wouldn't call it a silly question. I think I read somewhere that officers in Massachusetts aren't allowed to use tobacco. Hopefully somebody can back me up on this. The only reason that I mention this is that it all depends on the department and state requirements for the job.

There are a number of departments in Connecticut (New Britain, for one) that require all applicants to sign a form saying they have not smoked tobacco and that they will never smoke tobacco. If you don't sign the form you can't get hired.

I think there is a time limit of five years, so if you used to smoke but gave it up at least five years ago you can still get hired.

There are some departments here in South Florida that make you sign and notarize an affidavit stating that you haven't smoked or used any tobacco products for 12 months prior to you submitting the application.

Although tobacco use is not an attribute to proclaim , it isn't grounds to use against someone. My PD does not allow any tobacco use in the building or in a cruiser. You want to use ? , go outside.

I just came here on false pretenses.

When I saw the title, I figured there was going to be a picture of a smoking hot female officer. :D
