    Police Officer with a BA

Just curious, don't have a real clear picture on this. I have a BA in English/minor Sociology and an AA degree (glad I can say that as of 3 weeks ago). What does this mean joining as a police officer? One person told me that I get extra pay, another said something about detective work. I live in Florida, planning on joining in my home town of Hollywood after I complete my Guard training in SF (fingers are crossed for pre-selection). I was planning on getting an MS in Criminal Justice but would like to begin life after 4 solid packed years of college. Also, can someone quickly explain how one becomes a Detective, please? Or does being a detective have something to do with college degrees? thanks in advance...

Our dept. only pays extra for a CJ degree. Your English degree(s) would hopefully mean that you can write a good report !

In CA most depts. pay extra for the AA, Bachelors and Masters. Many depts. require a degree if you want to promote higher than Sgt. As far as a detective goes, you get the privilege of being on patrol first (this is NOT a sarcatic remark) and then after 4 or 5 years are eligible to become a detective. This is a competitive position so most people have to try multiple times. Detective is a promotion.
