Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts.

As far as your writing skills, I improved my spelling and vocabulary by reading. I read novels, text books, anything I could get my hands on. (If I didn't enjoy it, I didn't finish it.) Now I can identify when a word looks misspelled. I may have to write it out a few times but can usually identify the correct spelling.
As far as memory, I don't know of any books that help you improve that. I try to play word games or create mental pictures with what I'm trying to remember. I still suck at remembering numbers though. And placing faces with names... don't even get me started.
