Question How much notice will they give you??? (Los Angeles County Sheriff)

I was rushed through the last stages of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's processing for possible placement in a July 14th class...it's now July 1st, and no word...uuuugh!!! I have called Pre-employment and they stated I was still being considered, and to hold tight...my problem is I'm a clinician for the Department of Mental Health, and many of the clients I see will exp great difficulty unless the termination process is done with great care...I'm worried about my client's emotional well-being and my need to provided my employer at least two weeks notice...in any case, as it's hitting on the two week's notice mark, should I consider my placement into this class a dead issue? Any advice? By the way, my BG invest. was re-assigned to patrol and as of yet, no-body can tell me who has took his place...Everyone, being in limbo truly sucks.....:(

Wouldn't becoming a police officer be a more important thing than your present job? I realize that you care for these other people, but you gotta look out for #1 every now and then.

I disagree with this statement. He has responsiblities and comitments to these people. Im not saying he shouldnt look out for himself but he can't just get up and go.

Maybe Im wrong, but I take my job, no matter what it is, very seriously and hold my self to very high standards.

I wouldn't consider it a dead issue simply because it's less than two weeks before the class. You could very well get notified with little time to give your employer fair warning. I would be upfront with your patients/clients. Tell them you plan on leaving, and it might be as soon as 7-14. They'll be better off with the information so that they can take steps to do what's best for them.

    Mike,

Just FYI, I got 10 days. Some of my partners got as much as a month and as little as 3-4 days...

Oh for sure, I don't think he should just walk out of there without giving any notice whatsoever. All I am trying to get at is if he was rushed through to get into this class, he might have to talk to his present employers about his situation. I don't know.

Don't sweat it.........I had to give an eight day notice last week. Didn't they already call your boss during the background investigation?

Don't worry...they will find a way to make it work without you.

Thanks all for the input, I just was freak'n out a bit...everyday I've been jump'n at the phone like a kid wait'n for his/her prom date to call...I've worked with my client's and their families (children most often) for over 4 four years and it would be tough for both them and myself to just up-and -leave, but once called -I'd go, with absolutely no doubt, hesitance, or regret...I have talked with my current employer, but they don't truly believe the state of "not knowing" I have found myself in or the idea that I can be called in at a moments notice...oh well...I keep all of you posted - again, as always, thanks....

I had a 1 week notice as did about 10 of my classmates while the rest of my class of 52 got anywhere from 3 months to less. It just depends on where you are in the pile of applications they're doing backgrounds on.

It was about 3 weeks before my final day when I found out they were checking on all my relatives, friends, etc. Then I had to do another oral q&a with the background investigator, another 20 minute essay, drug test, psych, and poly within a 2 week period, wait for results, find out, and then inform my employer at the 1 week mark. My employer wasn't happy with such little notice, but she understood there was little the either of us could've done to prevent it. I told her in the weeks before that I may be putting in my 2 weeks if I found out I got hired by the PD.

Just to clarify my last post. If you get offerred the job then yes you should definatly take it and do what you feel is right but to say that becoming a PO is "more important" then these patients, as metallicat said, I believe is wrong. Obviously these patients depend on you.

Good luck and hopefully you can change your screen name soon!

Thanks USCG, I feel the same...to be honest, I feel fortunate and honored that these familes have let me into their lives and have trusted me often with their very welfare, but LE is a life long dream and LASD is a 1st choice location for me...I've started speaking to my clients about a week ago -starting with the ones whose emotional states are the most fragile...I would never purposely do anything to hurt these people, and care deeply for their well-being...

again thank you and everyone else for your responses, maybe I'll get some sleep tonight...

By the way I agree, "wannabe" to "gonnabe" has a nice ring to it!!!:D

Sorry to hear about that wanna. :( I hope a witness will come forward for you soon.

As far as telling your clients, I disagree with metallicat and agree with USCG. I am sure it took a long time to build that trust with your clients, and you don't want to just walk away without warning. I am not sure what kinds of mental/emotional problems these people have, but if they are not delusional, then they will understand that people do move on with jobs.
It always sucks that they don't give you enough notice that you are in so you can give proper 2 weeks notice, and wrap up your current job. For a field that prides itself on having high moral standards, it cracks me up that the PD's expect you to just leave your former job high and dry.
I have no advice to give you, since I don't know particulars of your clients and the best way to handle each of them (I suspect each would be different), but I admire that you are concerned about their well-being.

Hey Stump (and everyone) thanks again for your advice and kind words...anytime I want to feel better or at ease about things I come to this forum...

I got checked out by my MD today and I may have a sprang in my neck...it's stiff as heck, she says I should be fine in a week but I have to lay off excercising...and with the possibility of the Academy being two weeks away, that ain't to cool...no witnesses, aside from my running partner, as it was early in the morning...I can't imagine hitting someone and just taking off like that...people never cease to amaze me...
