    No BS assesmant please

    hi all,
new here, just out of the mlitary( me an about 10,000 other folks.lol). Looking into a LEO career. However, after an illustrius(sp?) military career, I was beat down by a bad divorce and ended up with a General under honorable discharge due to financial reasons, 2 calss C misdomeaners- 1.criminal mischeif for breaking a plexiglass cover on accident( yes it was lol) and 1.assult by contact NON DOMESTIC VIOLENCE. driving record is desent few tickets but only 1 in the last 4 yrs, no dui or drug use. Does anyone think I will be wasting my or any departments time even trying to apply, im a great candadate but it wouldnt seem so on paper, I cant change the past, only make the future better, any advice, suggestions or any otherwise helpfull stratigies are appreciated.

I am fairly certain that my department would not hire you with that background.

My advice to you would be to learn how to ask for advice without irritating the people you are asking, and to improve your spelling and grammar.

Do you not want a BS assessment, or are you just looking for someone to tell you what you want to hear?

    No BS assessment:
Some departments accept ONLY an honorable discharge, some have wiggle room.
Some departments are willing to overlook minor incidents (and I use the term "minor incidents" quite liberally here), some won't.
Some departments will overlook justifiable "financial difficulties", some won't.
Some departments will overlook some driving infractions, while some won't.

However, not many will look over ALL of these, especially if they are as recent as they sound.
Totality of the circumstances, so to speak.

Honestly, it sounds as if the discharge, misdemeanors and financial issues are recent. I suggest you put some time in between applying and these. Hit the books, get a degree (not necessarily in CJ), then consider applying.

The bottom line is: Even if you DO make past these problems, it all boils down to your competition. If it's between you and John Doe, and John Doe has no misdemeanors on his record, no financial difficulties in his past and an honorable discharge, who do YOU think will get the nod?

Is that enough "no BS" for you? If not, use the "SEARCH" button. This topic has been covered here ad nauseam.

If I were a moderator, I'd be hunting down that "CLOSE THREAD" button about right now .........

That's subjective. You may be a great person, but from what you've posted, you are far from a great candidate for employment in the LE field. Being a great candidate would mean that you don't have the background issues that you have.

Good point, Patrick. Cujo, what you may not realize is the DESPITE your desire to help the community and do your part in the public safety field, these have no barring on your status as a candidate for employment in this field. There are minimum hiring standards for a reason. Even if you have changed for the better and done all you can to improve yourself, the fact of the matter is that your actions CAN and DO shut certain opportunities to you (sometimes even permanently). I'm not saying this is definately the case for you, but it could be with certain departments. It's all about what the department wants in their new hires, not what the applicant wants in his career.

    Again, all departments are different.

Your first step should be to contact the departments that you are interested in, disclose EVERYTHING (without sugar coating it and while being SPECIFIC), and see what they have to say.

Being that your response was respectful, I'm (personally) giving you the benefit of the doubt, along with some green tarts (reputation points). Be respectful of others here, watch how your posts might be misinterpreted and you might just make it a while without getting banned .....

    Good luck.

    A little BS for you.

When you fill out an Employment Packet, use proper punctuation, spacing, capitalization and that other basic grade school skill ;)

Thank you for the constructive critisism Acreature. However, this is not a package and I was unaware that proper grammer and "other basic grade school skills" were require. Its takes a bit self control to not to lash out,but ive been nothing but respectfull for the breif time i have been on here, I would appreaciate the same, I may not be a "LEO" but i have been " in harms way" more times than i care to count to to protect the very freedom you have to say those things (As well as others on here im sure). Respect is earned not given. I very well may be banned for that stament, nothing i can do about it, least I got a small bit of knowledge. thnx for the info, all that gave it, esspecially the first respons. well put

Kinda like your office, or car, or other areas you may be responsible for. If it's a mess, it will make others wonder what your home looks like.

A forum which answers questions regarding a Profession..... Your grammar may make others (us, we, or them) wonder.

I was being respectful. As I offered advice, not a lashing.

Then I applogize. Sometimes it is difficult to distinguish between tones of voice when reading it. Thanks for the advise, point well taken.

It is impossible to hear a "tone of voice" on the computer screen. We often seen many people come to this forum and ask questions very similar to this one. The adivce on spelling and punctuation is one that is given quite a bit to those that don't seem to put that much effort into their posts.

My little bit of advice is to wait for alittle while and use your GI bill to get your degree. You said that you had a clean background up until this incident. I think you prove that this was an isolated incident by putting as much time as you can between you and the run of bad luck you have had. You didn't say (or I didn't catch) how old you are, but I would guess early 20's , if I am right, you have plenty of time.

The crime you want to fight will be there when you're ready - trust me on that !:D

I appreciate you found our little slice of heaven. Your intention to seek answers about law enforcement qualifications and your background is insightful.

I would be careful in lecturing law enforcement officers about your "past military exploits" of being harms way. I do not need to be reminded of the service the United States Military provides. Many on the forum have served in the United States Military.

The "Tone in your Voice" does not impress me one bit. Based on your disclosure I would have problems considering your or hiring you for a Law enforcement position. Your military discharge status is one example. Your previous criminal activity demonstrates serious character issues.
