    LAPD inspiration

To everyone in the LAPD process, I know alot of qualified people on this forum aren't getting in but don't be discouraged. I ran into some old aqquaintances from high school yesterday, and one of them was in the academy already and one was waiting for academy date. People are getting in and they are real young. So those of you with degrees and life experience shouldn't have much trouble. The one in academy was in the army but somehow got out early, i dont know the details, and the other doesn't have a degree, doesn't have military, and both are about 22-23 years old. Perhaps the LAPD wants young officers, Who knows? Good luck to everyone still in the process!

LAPD is looking for life experience first, but they need people. We are only hearing from the people getting Dq'd and not the BI. My class had a couple of guys who were 21..but our average age was 28-29.

We are so short of officers that they are giving us $1000 now instead of $500 for any recruit we bring in that graduates the academy.

I just talked to my next door neighbor who is a DI up in Manchester for the LAPD academy and told me he currently has 28 recruits in his class. These personel people just move to slow.

Yeah, during my oral they asked the 'what do you bring others don't' standard question at the end. I jokingly mentioned my age (over 30) but they made it very clear that it was actually attractive for several reasons. More life experience, more history (time to be stable, job history, relationships, etc.), less testosterone (just kidding). The sgt. on my board started at 29 and the detective started at 32. It was a nice way to end the board to be honest.

    On a side note:
I've been reading post after post on every board I could find using google, as well as other various documents. It seems to me, most of the dq's (non-physical, non-criminal) involve alleged deception by the applicant at one stage or another. For instance, I wanted to know how many of the applicants that reach the stage I'm at (bi left, then oral psych and thats it) make it to certification. I ended up finding a wonderful document put out by LA city personnel. It listed all the hiring stats since...2003 i think. It was sorted by race (and gender I believe), and stage (written, oral, poly, etc.). On the poly, only 26% passed. About 50% were dq'd on backgrounds, although, I'm not sure if this was initial background, the detailed background, or a combined stat. I'm thinking it was a combined stat (I doubt that 50% of applicants making it to the detailed bg are getting dq'd). For the psych, it was about 50% as well (give or take).

So...statistically speaking, the chances of finishing up and getting certed are about 25% (thats if the 50% attrition on bg's is just for the detailed background) once you finish the medical  . Overall though, from start to finish (from the written to cert) it was less than 5%. I didn't bother with the calculations, and it's probably even less than that. However, statistics are generally crap (to include my own), and at least 89% of them are made up on the spot :D . That being said, if you disclosed EVERYTHING, and didn't torture small animals as a child, I'd say once you clear medical your chances are about 90%.

P.S. I realized it was a bit long, but it was titled 'inspiration' after all. Hope it helps, if anyone wants the document link, post here and i'll see if i can dig it up (i downloaded the pdf version).

    They NEED LOTS of people!

Everyone knows they need people. They are without a doubt understaffed.
But, in my opinion they NEED to quit DQ'ing people over picking their noses.
I know a lot of people on this forum have been DQ'ed for one reason or another, the problem is that these very minor issues they DQ for are losing A LOT of applicants. Strange enough, some of these people are being picked up by other agencies. In my opinion, personnel is not taking a good overall look before they start DQ'ing left and right.
For those that do get in, I congradulate! It's definitely tough.
Again, all this is of course just my opinion.

Good luck to those applying or are in the process!

I was never deceptive AND STILL I didn't get hired. PERIOD.

I have been through the process so many times, and up to this point nobody has told me my recent DQ was because of deception.

I read something on the forum that someone wrote, it was something like.. just having a different BI makes all the difference in the world.
I believe that is true. Before my recent BI, I had a BI (during the "budget problems") that was positive and indicated to me that he was trying to get me hired. And guess what, even though I didn't get hired during that time of budget woes my life hasn't changed much. Other than the fact I started going to school. Sometimes it's very hard to please different people. And like I said on my other thread even though I am a minority that speaks a foreign languange I was NOT looking at this as a reason for hire. Besides, it didn't help anyways regardless.
And yes I passed; oral more than once (in the 90's and also 100%), polygraph (first time too no problems!), initial BI, psych writ and oral, med, physical.
Bottom line??????????????? Who knows. I should have been going else where. I wasted almost 5 years, and I am not the only one.
