How much of a hindrance might this be?

I have only had 2 jobs since HS and they both have been in the same field (Welding). I started my first job when I dropped out of HS at the age of 17 (got my GED at 18 though), I continued to work there for almost 5 years. During 4 of those years my father was the Shop Foreman, so in other words he was my boss. I had an excellent work record (few absences, never late to work, stuff like that).

Well here is my question to you all, during the last year of working at the first job my father wanted to start his own business in the same field and the owner wasnt too happy about the idea of having his competition knowing so much about all of his contacts and such. So my dad starts his own business and I am still working at place one (I am married and have a wife to support) all the while waiting until my dad establishes his business before I could go over there and work for him. Now I continued my excellent record by still coming into work and not being late, but all of a sudden the owner now has a disliking of me because of what my dad has done and starts to treat me like I dont even exist. Not looking at me or talking to me, really petty stuff. So one day I was doing what I do and he calls me in his office and tells me this is not working out we have to let you go, so I say "What is the reason?" and he proceeds to tell me "You have an attitude." granted this is the same guy I have worked for for almost 5 yrs averaging about 55 hrs a week, who I talked to everyday prior to the situation with my father, Now tells me I have an attitude?

Of course this is his bull**** way of just firing me for what my father has done. So I am just wondering how much is this gonna affect me since this job and working for my dad are the only 2 jobs Ive had as an adult. Thank you everyone for your help, I really appreciate it.

Hey doogie I'm no BI, but if you tell your BI what you wrote here I don't think you should have a problem. What agency are you applying with?

You'll have an opportunity to tell your BI about it. If you have any friends or contacts with that job that your BI could confirm the story (besides your dad who is biased for you) that's even better. I can't imagine this would cause you any serious problem. Don't sweat it.

I am going to be self-sponsoring myself into the academy here in Modesto. Then while I am in there I'll be applying to Modesto PD, Stanislaus Sheriff's, Ripon PD and maybe Ceres PD. My cousins husband just started with the Stanislaus Sheriff's so hopefully he might be able to get me some contact info on who I should be speaking to. I really want this profession and I know I can be an asset to those wonderful officers out there.

IMO, the fact that you dropped out of high school will hurt you more than being fired from that job.

While most minimum requirements state that agencies will accept people with GEDs, I know for a fact that we haven't hired anyone with a GED in a VERY long time. Education is becoming more and more important in the LE field. The better agencies out there aren't going to hire someone who dropped out of school and has a GED. If you want to make yourself competitive, you're going to need some college.

That's an excellent point. Most applicants have some college if not a degree. Even if a GED meets requirements it will be difficult to compete without an associate's or bachelor's degree.

I couldn't agree with you more Patrick, I was looking at the academy I am going to put myself through and when you complete the course you graduate with an A.A or A.S degree. So at least I will have something else on my file to show that I am serious about pursuing this career. I want to thank you guys again for being honest with me, I am not about the sugar coating effect and I'm glad you guys aren't either. It really helps someone who ACTUALLY means they want the good news or the bad news. Thanks Once Again.
