Chesterfield is the only one in the area who gives benefits after retirement here and unfortunately those just got cut way back which really sucks. Unfortunately ours are still the best even though they just got cut so that gives you an idea.

They've got us surrounded? Good. Now we can fire in any direction, those bastards wont get away this time

wow that does suck im starting to notice the VA depts have alot of catching up to do the northern depts in terms of pay, benefits and retierment. here basically everywhere is 20 year retirement with full medical paid for by agency. top pay in about 4-7 years depending on dept. the major turn off for so many people living in nyc or surrounding area is that house prices are through the roof and salaries are just not matching the pace at all.
Union states do have a distinct benefit above us right to work states when it comes to benefits and pay.
can someone explain what "right to work" means
in NY its an "at will" state.
also is richmond pd have there own pba or does the fop bargain for them. that maybe different to
Nobody does any bargaining for anyone here. There are no unions, no PBA. The FOP here is nothing like the FOP up there. Same organization very different roles. Here the FOP is basically a lobbying group whereas up there it is more of a union entity.
Right to work pretty much means they can fire you for no reason. There are no contracts, no set pay scales, nothing like that. The salaries in Central VA aren't too bad compared to the cost of living. I lived in NW Pennsylvania growing up and my dad is a cop up there. It is night and day as to how things get done.

wow that sounds pretty bad, i mean that means in a nutshell zero job security. now realistically in richmond and the surrounding depts are they firing people for any old little reason. it seems like richmond needs people or is trying to increase man power.
In reality it doesn't happen the way it sounds. Basically the "right to work" thing means that you have little course of action to fight things. Pretty much a "you don't like it nobody is forcing you to work here" attitude. They CAN fire someone for no reason though and not have to worry about breach of contract stuff, however like i said, they don't.

It takes an act of God to get fired by my agency. It seems like just about everyone who appeals their termination wins the appeal. I actually wish it was easier to fire someone because I know a few people who need to be fired.Originally Posted by ChesCopPodz

I was referring to Virginia in general. Most agencies have policies and appeals processes that severely limit the ability of an agency to arbitrarily fire someone. I have seen people within my agency who deserved to be fired who were able to keep their jobs. The main exception would be Sheriff's Offices, as a Deputy serves at the pleasure of the Sheriff.
oh ok thanks
as far as retirment is concerned do you guys retire at 50% of salary or is that different as well, Richmond is advertising a 20 year retiremtn which im assuming is kinda new to your state, but im not sure do you retire at 50% and does it increase for staying 25 and 30 years etc
thanks
Currently we get 1.7% per year of service and a supplement of $10k per year. A new multiplier just passed the Senate in the current General Assembly, which if passed by the House would bump the multiplier to 2.2% plus the suppplement.
I heard that LEOS would be gone if we got the new multiplier. My sgt is one of the major lobbiers for this and that's all he talks about is getting this bill passed.

I know it requires Sheriff's Offices to join VALORS and the state will pick up the bill if the county can't afford it. The problem is that rich counties who already pay VALORS are eventually going to ask the state to pick up their share(s) of VALOR payments as well.Originally Posted by ChesCopPodz
FWIW, I have heard that Del. Putney wants the bill continued until a study can be done. If it gets tabled I don't think we'll see it again for awhile. Kind of disgusting really, retirement for state LEO's (Deputies and Troopers) in VA ranks 49th out of 50 states. We have a $1.2 billion surplus and they are wringing their hands over whether to spend $17-21 million on LEO retirement payments.
hmm at a 20 year retirement thats only 34% and 42% if you stay to 25. that sure is different to. im not sure if the 19k supplement is for all the aganecis in va or just yours
