I did not move any money, did not mess with any accounts in any way. It was just a challenge, a stupid challenge, but all I did was look to see how they protected things.
If your wondering how I got caught, We did it from a wireless spot at a library, our our IPs were protected so they couldnt see what exact computer it came from but they could see where it came from. We did not anticipate cameras in a library.
In my opinion even if it was just a stupid challenge for you it was something not legal and if there are consequences you have to live with them.
I canīt just break into cars and then go and tell the cops it was a challenge and I never wanted to do anything bad. Do you know what i mean?
For the same reason I hate people that do drugs and then say they "just tried" them!!

So this happened in 2000/2001? Just how common was public wireless internet access at this time? To my recollection, not very common. I smell something.....Originally Posted by esosm

You are right. WLAN wasnīt very common for normal people in 2000. It was possible thought (even in 1998+) but the equipment needed was very expensive so only few people had it.
Even today good laptops are still expensive so the whole story sounds strange to me.

He could have been from a rich area or a rich school that funded wireless.
I know some computer techs. No way would I want that job.

I am very close to NIU which is a very large college which was one of the first to have Wireless and even help setup WI WI-FI so wireless was definatly around back 'then'.
Also for those of you that remember the old Nokia phones (the ones that lit up on the side) and a few more select phones you could connect your computer to that and use that as a wireless router.
Hacking does not require a 'good' laptop aslong as the machine runs and has an OS thats all you need pretty much need.
Also laptops today are really not that expensive, you can decent one for about a grand. Now if your an idiot and want to go to AlienWare and spend 12grand on a laptop then go ahead. But no one needs that much computer power.

Everyone does things that are wrong at one point in their life, but what seperates honest people from those who are not is they admit their wrong doings, are remorseful as a result of them, and work against ever doing them again. This doesn't seem to be the case with you. The only reason it seems that you haven't committed this sort of offense again is the leverage made by the judge, not the guilt you should have had for committing a crime.Originally Posted by esosm
The last thing the law enforcement profession needs is anymore dishonest people in it (unfortunately there are a few, as with any profession, but their wrong doings get them caught eventually). There are many exciting fields out there (which seems to be your major draw to LE), and many of them do not require the high level of morals and ethics that this profession does.
