Hello all.
I have heard rumors that the LASD is so short on deputies now that the whole hiring process can now be completed in 3 months.
I will be graduating in June this year, so am wondering when I should start applying.
Hello all.
I have heard rumors that the LASD is so short on deputies now that the whole hiring process can now be completed in 3 months.
I will be graduating in June this year, so am wondering when I should start applying.
As a current LASD academy member I can tell you the average process time for everyone in my class is 7 months. 3 months is how long it takes for background to be completed once your letters go out to your references (mine took 4 because my BI went on a 3 week vacation, doh!).
To give you an idea my process went like this:
-Written test: 5/21
-Oral: 6/4
-Poly: 6/30
-Letters sent: 7/15
-Meeting with BI: 9/20
-PAT: 10/22
-BG finished: 11/3
-Written psych/conditional offer: 11/16
-Medical: 11/22
-Oral psych: 11/23
-Offer of employment: 12/30
-Orientation: 1/25-27
-Black Monday: 1/30
I would test as soon as possible if this is what you really want. If you're going to graduate in June you can be confident that you'll be able to finish. If you have any other questions, try a quick search of "LASD" on this site as there are a couple of helpful, recent threads and if you have any additional questions PM me or post them here. Good luck.
Start the process (i.e....test). Complete the remainder as you get called for each step. If you are a good candidate and start the process 2/06, I'm pretty confident you will be in a academy slot by 10/06. Maybe sooner if your B/I is being pressured to fill slots.
Good LUCK!!!
Yeah I agree w/ cobra, and mike, you should get started as soon as you can. My process w/ them has been pretty smooth so far. I started last year in feb but i had to put everything on hold because of the military. But I started it back up in Nov. This is how my process has gone:
-02/01-Written
-2/05-Oral
Put on hold because too much time left in the military
-11/01-Pre background
-11/10-Poly
-11/23-Meeting with BI
-12/17-Coopers physical test
-2/1/06-Written psych
Med and oral psych????-Probably within the next couple of weeks.
Hopefully ill be in the upcoming march academy, if you communicate with you BI that your waiting to graduate, im sure he/she wouldnt have a problem with that. Good luck!
10/24 Written
10/28 Oral
11/30 Pre-BG
12/05 Poly
01/04 Call from BI
zzzz....
02/? BI interview
05/? (Hopefully) employment offer
3 months is only for background, otherwise I wouldn't be waiting right now!

I just completed Week 1 and my suggestion for all of you is to attend the work out session and get in shape. We had alot of tired, sad looking people today during PT. It is hard and non-stop...they really push you to the limit. The next class isn't until March so start working out now if you haven't.
Best of luck to you all!
TWO MINUTES! :p
Class 347-two Minutes!
lol keep it up Mike!

Just to reinforce what I said earlier about pre-academy physical training: we just finished Day 6 and we've lost 6! Another one was injured today during PT...she may be gone tomorrow!
"The more you sweat in here the less you bleed on the streets."
Good luck everyone and keep us all posted on your progress.
As far as trainee dropping out from the academy, is it all because they are all out of shape? I mean, will anyone be dropped because of poor academic like low test scores and so forth? I am very suprise to hear that 6 has been gone within 1 week. 22 weeks to go...
What is it like being in the academy? How about the hours? I know you get to go home every night, do you have a lot of studying after the day?
Hey minizero, people could get dropped for double failing any test, so you could get dropped for academics, theres like 42 learning domains you must be proficient in, double failing any of those will get you dropped, and the LASD academy is eighteen weeks long.
I went to an academy information seminar a few weeks ago, where the recruit training staff and some recruits that were in the current class came to speak. They stated the hours were something like 6:30, 7 AM to about 3:30, 4 PM. Lots of your time away from the academy is consumed by studying and getting ready for the next day.

I Was At That Seminar Too....just Be Prepared To Study. I Took The Coopers Test A Few Weeks Ago Also And There Are A Lot Of Out Of Shape People. All I Can Say Is Run And When You Get Tired...keep Running. I Have Been Running For 4 To 5 Days A Week, Every Week Since June. I Am Half Way Through My Background So Hopefully Ill Get The Call Soon. Preety Fast Process Though... I Took The Written On Nov 20
We lost our first guy overnight between Monday/Tuesday - he just didn't show up the next day. He was average build so I couldn't say if he was out of shape or not (and I certainly didn't have the time/energy to be worried about other people that first day lol). We had a funny feeling when we saw him Monday morning and he hadn't cut his hair (still 3-4" long) over the weekend...
People leave for any number of reasons...too tough, don't think they can handle the job itself, etc. We just had another quit today because he was in boiling trouble over integrity issues and figured it was just be better if he left. No one has failed out because we haven't done enough yet to allow for it.
PS. Samuel, were you there Day 1 last week? I ended up having to drop and push because my hair was a 1 and not a 0.
