The CLOZE portion of the written test is where you use your knowledge of words to fill in the blanks in the given paragraphs. Not only do you have to fill in the words, but it has to be the right word to fight the number of letter spaces they supply for the word.Originally Posted by KittyMom

Is it just ducking under the bars, or is it military like going over and under? I don't know how to prepare for this, that's what's worrying me, I don't know what to practice exactly.
great news!Originally Posted by Uprock
don't stress off the PAT too much. Do they still require you to climb the 6ft solid wall for SFPD? I know that they were talking about taking that out of the test. I was having some trouble with that, but it's all technique, once you get that down it's not too difficult.
Pretty much in that order. It's inside a gym, so you go around twice. The wall is not 6' but...seemed like 3' to me. The ducking under the bars is nothing like the military. You just can't knock it off when you go under it. Watch the others when they push the sled, so you get an idea of where to put your hands.Originally Posted by Uprock
I think what you need to work on is building up your stamina.
When I took the PAT, I ran my butt off in order to make sure I didn't cut it close. However during the dummy drag, I was walking backwards too fast and I tripped. I was stunned that I fell; luckily the instructors were yelling at me to get up and finish. I probably lost a good 5 or more seconds there. I finished in 44.2 something seconds. Every second does count :D
The PAT is too see if you meet the minimum requirements. From what I hear from other candidates and officres of the SFPD, the physical stuff is alot harder in the academy. Good luck
According to the papers they gave me, it's a 3 foot wall, so I don't know.Originally Posted by hopefull
So you do the course twice? :eek:Originally Posted by EventHorizon
I'll work on my stamina for sure. I'm running constantly already anyway to build that up.
Thanks for the info!
No, luckily, I made it under the alloted time. Even if it was by two hundreths of a second:D
Goes to show, always finish the course. Never give up.
Hey uprock, congrats on passing!!!
I got my letter last week also... My PAT is Feb, 24th at 11:30 AM
It seems like a pretty easy test, but I would still really appreciate any input you can give once you have given it a try.
GOOD LUCK!:D
Everyone getting ready for the PAT? I think the only time I will be able to make it is on the March 3rd date...which is apparently the last time it's offered so if I screw up then, I'm a goner! Unfortunately, that date is where I can get the cheapest airfare...it's a pain in the a** to come out from Jersey. Anyone have any ideas how many times I will have to come out there total before they make their decisions, so I can get an idea of how much I'll have to spend in airfare!?
Also, is the 44.4 seconds exemption confirmed? Anyone call up SFPD and ask them?
I'm wondering if they'll even admit that time issue, but I'll give it a try and call tomorrow.Originally Posted by mbressman
As for airfare, considering the PAT is part of the hiring process, you still have to come back for the Oral Panel Review, BI interview?, medical/psych/polygraph. I think they do that last one all at one time though, not sure.
Hey uprock
did you get a chance to do the practice run?
If so hows the course layed out?
I did, and it was kind of tough. I was pretty winded by the time I finished but I did pass it in 36.7 seconds, and passed the trigger pull as well. All I have to do now is pass the real one this Friday at 2:30 :DOriginally Posted by SFPDwannabe
What EventHorizon said is true. If you do pass the obstacle course in under 44.4 seconds, you automatically pass, but all you have to do is the trigger pull and pass that, and you're good to go onto the next stage. Apparently they score off a point system by the handout they gave me, and you need 666 points to pass. The handout shows how they apply the points. When I went they showed some short videos on the each segment of the course, and a real time one. They also showed how the other testing would be like if you don't pass the obstacle course.
It was laid out like the handout said, but arranged a little different. It went:
Sitting start
Duck under bar
3 foot wall
Jump curb
Duck under bar (shorter than the first one)
220lbs sled
[run through course again without sitting start]
Dummy pull
By the time I got to the dummy pull I was drained, but did it all the way through. I totally underestimated it eventhough it was only 140lbs, but it felt like more since I was tired. The practice run was very benefitting now I know what to expect.
Since it's in a gym, wear shoes with grip. When I pushed the sled my shoes were sliding on the floor, I was wearing trail running NewBalance shoes, but it did the trick. I was afraid of slipping on the floor when rounding some turns, so I took a little slow approach on the turn to jump the 3 foot barrier. I just vaulted it with one hand holding it, and jumping over. A girl actually almost fell over it that tried to all out jump over it, another girl had problems pushing the sled and the dummy pull, and another girl couldn't for the life of her pull the dummy, but she did it and her time sucked and they didn't call it out to her.
Shoot me a PM if you need anymore info on it :p
