Some great news today!

Well, after 11 months of testing and interviewing, today I was called by the RCMP and told that I was being given a conditional offer. The official written offer should be in the mail tomorrow. They wanted to let me know they are considering shipping me out either 6 days from now :eek: or in about 1 month to attend Depot (the national training academy for the RCMP).

I am pretty thrilled, but wanted to see if you guys (verified leos and academy peoples thoughts here would be really appreciated) had any advice for going through the academy. Some people seem to think flying under the radar is a good idea so that you dont catch the attention or wrath of the drill instructor, while others say go all out...in which case you will be assigned tons of extra duties because you are a keener.

Thank for all the input over the last 12 months guys, you have all been very helpful and we have had some great discussions. Looking forward to continuing that once I have graduated and become verified :cool: . Man I am flying high today!

First off, I would like to say congrats! I am currently in the academy and have about a week and a half left and I think the best thing to do is fly UNDER the radar! I feel the key to success is to make sure that you STUDY and STUDY hard.

Congrats. While I cannot speak for the academy you will attend, let me say you can only be yourself. If you stand out, in a good way hopefully, then deal with it. If you can go through low key, then fine. Be yourself, and like others said study hard.

Thanks for all the congrats guys...Yeah I will have to wear the red serge on graduation. As for moose riding, I think its one of the core concepts covered in the police driving unit class ;).

I agree. If you have a natural tendency to stand out in a good way, do it. I know that I don't want to just pass under the radar, I want to make a good impression for the academy is the foundation of my career. BTW, my academy is taught by the Sgts. and other superiors I will be working under.

To answer your question, "flying under the radar" is good....IF you don't belong in the academy.

But if your working hard, doing what you should be doing, and doing it well, you shouldn't need to fly under the radar.

Thanks again for all the great advice and congrats guys. I signed my cadet training agreement yesterday and my expected departure date to the academy is "before the end of November '05". I was reading the cadet handbook that was issued as well....lots to look forward to there...like being pepper sprayed, tazed and then stuck in a tear gas chamber and made to answer questions :D .

As for what I will do at the academy...I will simply do my best. If I stand out in a positive way and I am assigned to do some extra duties to help my troop (squad) then so be it. It's all a learning experience right?

Update:

Got the call today with my exact dates. I start the Academy on December 12th and my flight to the academy on the 11th! I'll see if I can post some pics from the Academy here while I'm there. The pepper spray ones seem to be pretty popular :eek: .
