    Colorado State Patrol

Is anyone applying for the Trooper positions open in Colorado? Can you give any insight on what the process is like? Also, I noticed their policy for prior drug use is 12 months with marijuana. I tried it for the first and last time last October, so my 12 months will be over this October. Will I still be in a bad position having made that mistake, or will they look at the entire person? I have a B.S. in Finance (not that you have to have a degree, but perhaps it would help?) and a few years work experience, but I want a career change into law enforcement and the retirement looks great in the PERA system. Also, are there ever any opportunities for detective work after a few years of being a trooper? Does it open doors at all for detective work, or is that more common in local police departments? Are there any current troopers that can provide their opinions on their choice to become a trooper? Do you love your job, somewhat like it, or not like it at all ( I would assume you'd get another job if this was the case).

    Thanks for any responses! :D

The process is, in a word, 'tough'. The CSP, like most state police agencies, don't drop their standards just for the numbers. The recruiting standard is high, their academy is very tough. I'm almost certain they will not take you if you smoked MJ within the last 12 months. While the B.S is a good thing to have, the CSP value military service above all else, except LE experience. I wouldn't worry too much about becoming a detective or the retirement system at this stage as you have other issues (recent drug use) to overcome.

I am headed up to CO. from FL. this weekend to take my exam. I had used marajuana in my past, but it was 5 years ago. The website is very detailed on what the requirements are and they seem to be hiring right now. The application is one of the most extensive I have seen but I like the fact that they seem to be very organized and the recruiters are also right on top of things. Be honest in answering all the questions and don't hesitate to contact one of the recruiters. Good luck!
