eyesight requirement

I will be graduating with a bs in cj this summer. My plans are to enroll in the police academy this fall at my local college. Last week I had my yearly eye exam. My eye doctor told me that I could not work for the Michigan State Police because my eye sight must be atleast 20/40 uncorrected. Mine is just a little worse. Anyways, my question is this, Is this a common requirement for police departments? I feel a little foolish for asking this so late in the game, but I don't want to find out the hard way.

Yes, must agencies have a eye sight requirement, I check the departments web site or call HR to find out the requirement. If you do not meet the requirement then consider lasik eye surgery.

What does the Michigan State Police say specifically? For example, when I applied to the New York State Police they required no worse than 20/100 uncorrected and must be corrected to 20/20 with surgery or refraction. Eye sight testing, to my knowledge, is tested in every police department. If I were you I would check with the Michigan State Police as they may know better than your doctor.

A lot of the Old School members I've talked to said the only thing they needed to pass the eye exam was a good memory.

I really like the area, I lived just outside of Calgary in Strathmore. So what does your brother think of the shooting last week in Calgary? Do you work for EPS?

Small world. My friend is a Mountie out in Chestermere (he did his training in Strathmore though). As far as the shooting goes...well the guy deserved it but if CPS had Tasers, the guy would be alive today. I start with EPS on Monday as a Recruit Constable. Needless to say I am VERY excited. :D
