question on past background BI

I live in Sc and had applied at the columbia police department. I made it through all the stages and got to the poly whre i was asked all the questions that would be on it. The question of had you had any sexual activity with a minor while an adult, i answered yes to this question because my fiance and i were together when i was 18 and she was 15 ( i am now almost 23). he told me right then and there my offer was off the table and pretty much told me i was screwed. I know other depts will look into why i was not hired and i was wondering how bad that will hurt me. That question was never anywhere on my background packet and has not been on the other two depts i have apps in with now. Any help here on what i should and can do to best be able to get a job.

i dont know what to say? just tell BI for the other department the truth. because they will find out. The BI from that department will foward all documents and findings. good luck

Well, if you were in Florida, you would have been arrested right there and then. Thats one of those life time felonies. In addition, you picture would be blasted all over FDLE's website for a few years, and possibly forever. You may deduce what I'm trying to convey here.

You were a legal adult and had sex with a minor child ? I know it was "only" 3 yrs difference but adult compared to a minor is a significant difference. I think you will have a hard time getting past this. And even if she said "yes" she wasn't old enough to say yes.

15 is very young, and the maturity gap between your age is huge. I would call the BIs in the departments you intend to apply for, they may be able to relay more information about your local laws.

I talked to a sheriff in the upstate and he told me that it was pretty much crap. he said they ask that queston on their pre poly and poly but it was not meant in that way. however he did not tell me how to get around it before the poly. 16 in sc is legal age of consent and i missed it by a few months. Its not even like it was behind our parents' backs her parents knew and we are all very close. I know it was illegal but this has always been my dream and I am getting really worried i may not be able to live it out just because i told the truth. i know there are quite a few officers in my area that have done the same thing but did not tell. any more help here.

Ahh, same story, different wording. If you've ALWAYS wanted to be a LEO, then why would you knowingly engage in illegal sexual behavior? I don't expect you to answer that question, as there is likely not a response that can be offered that would be satisfying to a hiring agency. Many dream of being a LEO since they were kids, and many carefully monitor their behaviors to ensure that they do not screw (no pun intended) their chances. This is not the case in your situation, and while I'm sorry to say this, I don't foresee this being an issue that can be easily overcome (if overcome at all).

You also were disqualified on the fact on background you said you had not comitted a felony and infact from what you described it's statutory rape. You are a felon and will not be hired by any LE agency,

Of course, Arizona also says it's ok if there's no more than 2 years of age difference, and the older person has not reached his/her 19th birthday. sjohnson, does your state have any kind of provision like this?

When I was 18 my girlfriend at the time was 17, both departments I've worked for had no problem with that age difference. With an age differene of three years, I can see where they could have a problem with it.

I do know several Deputies who have been in your situation. Some even had children with the girls. The one thing I know they all had in common was they eventualy married the same girl and not all of them married as teenagers. A couple waited until their twenties. For some reason the longevity of the relationship and eventual merital staus made you for something. I'm not saying getting married will solve the problem. But that there may still be hope for you getting hired in LE. It just might not be with that department.

Your situation is different since the age gap was small.

As you can see for thos perons though she was 15 and he was 18 that's well over the range of most states have for the age difference.

You are correct though that most state laws do have a time frame of what is considered ok and from what I have seen it is 2 years.

NC age of consent is 16. Under 16 must be no more than a 4 yr difference, but that doesn't count 13 and younger.
