How to tell if a BI has started?

I know I should be patient, but....

How can I tell if a background investigation has started (other than calling the BI and asking/making a nuisance of myself)? Are there any tell tale signs? I was thinking about getting a credit check account to see if anyone is snooping around my credit history.

I talked to a detective friend of mine (who works for the dept. I applied at and and who I used as a reference) and he said that they usually wait until the end to do the references.

I suppose I am getting antsy! After a couple weeks or written test, physical test, oral board, and poly I find I have absolutely NOTHING to do!

Relax dude, pestering your BI won't speed it up. Usually they wait to wrap up your BI as close to an academy as possible so they aren't hiring you and having you sit around waiting. It'll happen when it happens...

Good point. The BI stated that they want to hire by March 7th in order to start the academy march 14th.

Showing your interest in how everything is going is great....one time. After that, a BI gets a little tiffed. Let them do their job and you just be patient and hope for the best. Good luck to you!

This thread is in reference to Tempe. However, I talked to the State of AZ HR dept. today and they are mailing out testing invites Thursday (I'm applying there too).

Funny thing- a friend of mine who is a Tempe detective called today and told me they called him about me. He didn't go into specifics but just said that he was called.

I'll take that to mean the BI has started.

Another good way to tell is when the BI guy calls your wife and asks to come over and chat for 20 minutes or so (I assume they were talking about me...hmmmm...).

He came over on Thursday, they chatted, and he told her the BI should be done in two weeks. Then it's psych/physical. If at that point I am still one of the "best applicants" I get to go to ALEA starting the 14th of March.

This will be a long two weeks....
