    Police Psychological Test

Over the past few years, I have been treated for depression and just recently felt like I can go on with life and work again in Law Enforcement.

I am considering applying for a police officer job that requires a Psychological test (MMPI-2?) and I am wondering what I should expect? If a person rates high in the depression portion of the test, is that automatically disqualifying? Are the questions overt or covert in nature?

I would say it depends on why you were depressed. Sorry about that, I certainly hope you are feeling better now.

    Sampson-

    Welcome to the forum!

The MMPI is a set of 500+ true/false questions that test a variety of psychological areas. I don't know if it will pick up depression or not, nor do I know how the department you are interested in will look at that condition.

What I do know is that there is only one way to find out, and that is to apply...nothing ventured, nothing gained!!

    Good Luck-

If you go to your library reference section you will find a book that breaks down down the MMPI and how it is scored. I think it actually called "MMPI" or at least has that in the title. Every department has its variances that they look for, but some research will make the test a lot less of an enigma for you. It's an interesting book, I wish I could remember the exact title of it.

The MMPI test is a HUGE test, that asks the same questions over and over again. There are slight differences in the wording of the question.

After you take the MMPI, a composite and sectional scores are given to the Psychologist. When you sit down for the Psych Oral, the shrink will ask you about any problem areas that they think showed up on the MMPI scores. Every department grades differently. You can fail the MMPI/Oral Psych at one department, yet pass at the next one.

I've heard some weird weird stories about oral Psychs. My SGT. started yelling at the shrink and walked out. He passed! Another buddy said he remained absolutely calm throughout the whole thing, and failed.

I dunno... The whole thing is a big mind f***.
