Question ? on employment in LE

I live in SC and have been trying to get a job in LE for close to a year now. I have applied at a number of agencies around the state and seem to be getting beaten out by people with military experience even with probably haigher test scores than them. I attended college for almost 4 years and have 93 credit hours but i ran out of money and have too many loans to continue at this point. Is there anything that can help me look better the the hiring agencies. I understand the military thing but they seem to think that it you are so much better if you have this experience. i am not putting that down, i just dont understand. Also I have some question on physical fitness tests, how long are the runs (how quickly must you do it), alos what number o fpushups and situps are required. I cannot seem to find any info on the pushups or situps anywhere. My background is very clean also. I did smoke weed a few times in high school but nothing more than a few times and have never been in any trouble except a couple of speeding tickets. any help from everyone would be greatly appreciated.

Some agencies give a little extra boost during the process for prior service but it is nothing stupendous.

Are you sure that you beat them out on the test scores? How many agencies have you applied to? How well did you do in the other portions of the process? Background? Interviews? Boards? How is your work history? Do you need to have the academy out of the way prior to applying or does the agency sponsor you? Are you willing to relocate?
You know the difference between a job and a duty? A job you can refuse to do because it's dangerous; a duty you must do even if it is dangerous.

Start hitting up some websites for major PD's, they usually have the fitness requirements listed. ANd those requirements are pretty much universal.

I have applied at 5 agencies total, I am not positive i scored any higher on the test scores than others but by talking to a few people i seem to have done much better than them. Now when it comes to interviews I really have no idea how i did, i felt good after but I dont really know how to find out how i did. I did buy a house last year so I do have about 80,000 in debt but I have been told that should not hurt me as long as i keep paying what i am supposed to. These are all smaller agencies, (less than 150 sworn officers) so maybe that is a problem. if anyone knows anythign i can do to help myself i'd appreciate knowing, thanks

$80k of debt is going to hurt unless it's mortgage debt.

Finish your degree first. It gets much tougher to finish the degree as you get older.

The only caveat to this is if you are applying to a sheriff's department where you have a mandatory number of years in jail. I've seen many deputies get their BA/BS, Master, etc while pulling jail duty.

Depending on the psychologist/background/interviewer - Being close to finishing your degree (but not actually trying to finish it), is a minus for you. It shows that you start things, but don't finish them.

    Total Package

Basically, this guy's story keeps getting better. To allow me to sum it up:

Strike 1 - He smoked weed "a few times"

Strike 2 - He is about 80K in debt

Strike 3,4,5,6,7,8,9 & 10 - He committed statutory rape by having sex with someone under the age of legal consent in his state.

My advice is that your best chance for getting involved with law enforcement involves corrections officers - I think you will be dealing with them alot in your future.

Oops, looks like Mr. Johnson "forgot" to include the entire story in his original post. Surely that can't be the reason for his inability to get hired by a department  .
